Richelle Frabotta Lecture

As the Center begins providing services, the College of Education Health and Society will be of primary focus. Incorporating sex/ual/ity and sexuality education into course offerings, thematic sequences, areas of concentrations and tracks, and certification processes are all options. We will be supporting colleagues with their research, and advancing critical thinking around sexuality education, health and wellness subject matter. 

We can prepare students who will work in the human services fields to become proficient in understanding sexuality in multiple and diverse contexts. It is important to note that clinical professionals (Licensed Independent Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Counselors) can choose to identify as a sex therapist in their scope of practice without certification or course work to support the title. Why not prepare academically during undergrad?

FSW 365 Family Life Sexuality Education

(offered fall and spring semesters)

Sexuality Education teaches us about being human and living life with its myriad of choices and various outcomes (i.e. the good, the bad and the ugly, etc.). Sexuality Education provides opportunities to address very real and perhaps very personal, ideas/concerns/issues while providing us occasion to “own our stuff”.

The first half of the semester includes historical and conceptual information regarding the evolving discipline that is commonly referred to as “Sex Ed”.  Then, during the second half of the semester, we move to material that is more practical and directly applicable to you…and the awesome idea of being a sexually healthy person now and throughout your life.

Students who are planning to pursue jobs or careers as Sexuality Educators or Clinicians can use this course to assist in pursuing certification as an NCFR (Certified Family Life Educator) and/or an AASECT (Certified Sexuality Educator). Throughout the semester, we will identify teaching strategies, methodology and best practices for working with various age groups to deliver quality Sexuality Education services.

Education Studies Sexuality Concentration

In partnership with the Department of Educational Leadership, Family Science and Social Work has contributed to the creation of an Education Studies major that offers a sexuality concentration. This specific coursework was created with criteria in mind for earning Certification as a Sexuality Educator from the AASECT organization. This will be a huge advantage for those students pursuing graduate degrees and/or professional positions in Education, Family Science, or Social Work fields.

Teaching Philosophy

When teaching human sexuality, regardless of the venue, my primary goals are to affect a progressed comfort level and provide an evolved understanding of the subject matter with all participants in my classroom. I do this by (co)creating an atmosphere of acceptance where we can raise awareness for personal reflection while practicing critical thinking. I recognize that teaching openly and frankly from a sex-positive perspective increases comfort level and knowledge with what are historically, traditionally and potentially awkward and challenging subjects. I use multiple teaching strategies, methodologies, comprehensive sexuality education theory and humor to encourage my students to relate and integrate concepts into their unique way of connecting sexually with themselves and others. All sexuality education services that I provide incorporate contemporary standards of excellence, best practices and ethics.

 Richelle, Thank you so much for your support and understanding. On an unrelated note, I just want to share my perspective as a student coming from the Farmer School and taking this class as part of my thematic sequence. I initially decided to declare the Family Studies thematic sequence because I heard it was easy and the classes could help boost my GPA. And now that I’m in the final course of the sequence, I can honestly say that I’m so glad I chose this 3-course path. Not because the material may have been easier to learn than other sequences, but because I have gained valuable knowledge that I will be able to apply throughout the rest of my life when I interact with children and adolescents, or when/if I have kids of my own. To speak in regards to you and your class specifically, it is one of the few classes I’ve taken at Miami that I actually look forward to going to. Your lectures/discussions are engaging, inclusive of various cultures, and highly relatable. You are one of the realest persons I have ever met and I respect the hell out of you (pardon my French). It seems like you have a magical way of positively impacting almost anyone you come in contact with (if they give you the time of day) because of how understanding, realistic, and relatable you are. At least that’s how I feel. A lot of what you’ve already said this semester has resonated with me. I appreciate you and your teaching style, as it promotes an environment for students to share their own unique experiences and perspectives. As you might have been able to tell, I’m more of an observer/listener in large groups, but that doesn’t mean I’m not engaged and learning a lot! Just wanted to share my thoughts with you since I doubt you have too many business students in your classes. Thank you for being you. Keep keepin’ it real!
