Teaching

EDL 318 Teacher Leadership and School Organization.
This course is designed to challenge and shape students' conceptions of educational organizations and cultures; their professional development as teachers and/or educational staff members; as well as the acts of teaching, curriculum development, teaming and leadership. The course encourages the development of personal and professional theoretical frameworks and practical tools for enhancing awareness of and action in educational roles as decision-maker, curriculum-creator, inquirer, community member/builder, democratic citizen, team member, teacher and leade

EDL 601 Introduction to Leadership and EDL 603, Teacher Leadership
This course discusses authentic improvement of learning and instruction in schools with aspiring school leaders. The course seeks to model improvement practices as they might be implemented in K-12 schools. As practicing education professionals, all members of the group are encouraged to behave as reflective practitioners, to question assumptions thoughtfully, to regard conclusions as tentative, and to stretch intellectually beyond conventional standards. As educators, we aspire to “practice what we preach,” to assume the responsibilities of lifelong learners in a professional endeavor, and to behave as we wish our students to behave.

EDL 609, Policy and Politics
Decisions about educational policy and practice are influenced by politics. Elected officials and school leaders who make instructional, management, governance, and funding decisions are both constrained and enabled by local, state, and national politics. This course introduces students to the study of the politics of education and examines educational politics at the federal and state levels while focusing on the district level as the unit of analysis particularly relevant to aspiring school leaders.

EDL 645, Professional Development and Improving Instruction
This course is designed to help educators develop the knowledge and skills to create more effective instructional supervision and professional development programs in school settings. The course seeks to model professional development practices as they might be implemented in K-12 schools. As practicing education professionals, all members of the group are encouraged to behave as reflective practitioners, to question assumptions thoughtfully, to consider conclusions to be tentative, and to stretch intellectually beyond conventional standards. As educators, we aspire to “practice what we preach,” to assume the responsibilities of lifelong learners in a professional endeavor, and to behave as we would like our students to behave.

EDL 721, Pupil Personnel Services,
This course is designed to engage students in the analysis and evaluation of student services programs, examining current issues in their legal and ethical context.
Students will examine student services from the perspective of students, parents, teachers, and administrators and discuss legal issues at the federal and state levels.

EDL 725, Staff Personnel Administration
This course is designed to assist students in acquiring knowledge and skills in implementing the school personnel sequence, with emphasis on recruitment, retention and relationships.

EDL 721 and 630B Internships
