Want to be the teacher who inspires the next Einstein, Rosalind Franklin, or George Washington Carver? Miami University’s Teacher Education department prepares future science teachers who have a developing passion for the skill and art of teaching, a commitment to educational equity, and a heart for students. Our students enjoy the benefits of a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy, along with intensive content preparation in your area of science. We also provide courses that teach you how to teach students with special needs.
Integrated Science majors gain many hours of actual scientific research experience thus understanding the how and why's of doing science.
STE(A)M experiences are infused throughout the program. The Department of Teacher Education offers a STEM Thematic Sequence that Integrated Science majors can take as electives (will not count as their Thematic Sequence).
This degree stresses the latest, exemplary science teaching strategies, such as inquiry/discovery learning, project-based learning, problem-based learning, cooperative learning, student-focused assessments, and claim-evidence-reasoning methods. Students will be given many opportunities to address equity issues in science and social justice as it relates to the science classroom.
The Integrated Science major affords all majors the opportunity to teach the four science disciplines (biology, earth science, chemistry, and physics) upon graduation. Within this degree, majors select one science area to be their specialty and then are provided a broad range of exposure to the other three scientific disciplines.
A degree in Integrated Science is highly valued by school districts and school administrators throughout Ohio and all the other states.

Program Admission and Licensure Information
Students declare a pre-major in a Teacher Education program at the time of university admission or as soon as possible. After meeting the criteria of acceptance, students apply for a cohort—a group of students selected to experience methods courses and field experiences together.
Miami's Department of Teacher Education is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. While Miami participates in licensure of teachers through an interstate agreement, if you are planning to teach in another state, you should contact that state's certification office so you can apply for certification or licensure in that state.
