Special Education adheres to the Miami University Graduate School policy regarding admission. [Refer to Section 1 of the Handbook for Graduate Students and Faculty.]

The Special Education Online Hybrid program is available for part-time enrollment only. Prospective students interested in the licensure-only option are encouraged to consider applying to the M.Ed. program. Licensure courses count toward the master’s degree and only an additional 4 courses (and a research project) are required to earn the M.Ed. Students in the M.Ed. program may be license-eligible prior to completing their degrees.

Licensure-only program students may apply for the M.Ed. program after they’ve started the licensure program. However, this will require an additional application and fee, and no more than 12 of the most recent graduate hours earned as a non-degree-seeking, continuing graduate status student can be applied toward a graduate degree. Therefore, enrolled licensure students should submit their applications to the M.Ed. program in their first or second semester at Miami to have all of their hours count towards the degree. All 12 hours are subject to normal time limitations for credit toward a degree.

Application Procedure

The application and method for submitting materials is unique to the program option chosen. Admission is only available in the fall and spring semesters. Applicants who have teaching licenses and are only pursuing the intervention specialist licensure will select "Non-Degree/Non-Certificate" on page one of the application. All other applicants will apply as degree-seeking applicants. Given the online hybrid nature of our program, international students (unaffiliated with our online Bermuda College partnership) are not eligible for enrolling in the SEOH program.

Master’s degree applicants will submit all application materials to the Miami University Graduate School. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded with one’s application. However, admitted students must mail to the Graduate School official transcripts prior to enrollment. The Graduate School address is: Miami University, 501 E. High Street, Room 102 Roudebush Hall, Oxford, OH 45056.

Non-Degree/License-Only applicants select "Non-Degree/Non-Certificate" on page one of the application. Applicants must submit a $20 application fee to complete the Graduate School application. All other required application items should be separately uploaded to the program. Any licensure-only student who later decides to pursue the M.Ed. must submit a degree-seeking application prior to registering for her/his 12th credit hour of the licensure program.

The required application items are as follows:

  • Graduate School Application
    • The 'Domestic' application is for degree-seekers (licensure+degree as well as degree-only)
    • The 'Continuing Graduate Status' application is for students seeking the license but not a degree
  • College transcripts
  • Copy of teaching license (licensure-only applicants)
  • Personal statement describing reasons for pursuing a career in special education and one's ability to complete online coursework
  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae
  • Three professional letters of recommendation addressing one’s potential for advanced graduate study

Deadline and Notification

The SEOH program admits students in the fall and spring terms only. All application materials must be received by the date corresponding to the program type and term below.

  • Fall M.Ed. program application deadline - July 1
  • Fall Licensure-only application deadline - August 1
  • Spring M.Ed. program application deadline - January 1
  • Spring Licensure-only application deadline - January 15

The SEOH program practices rolling admission. Complete applications are reviewed as they are received. Decisions are typically made within four weeks. Again, we encourage licensure-only applicants to consider applying for the M.Ed. It isn’t necessary to do so at the time of the initial application, but students who apply later must submit their M.Ed. application prior to registering for their twelfth credit hour of the licensure program. This ensures that courses taken under “Continuing Graduate Status” will be applied to the M.Ed. program.

International Students

Prospective international students interested in studying at Miami University on a student visa are advised that the SEOH program is an online-hybrid program in which 80% of the coursework is completed online and 20% is completed in face-to-face meetings. The SEOH program does not meet the educational requirements for applying for immigration and/or a student visa and therefore, international students should not apply for admission to the program. Inquiries relating to immigration and visas should be directed to the International Students and Scholars Services office: 200 MacMillan Hall | 513-529-5628 |
