Several Farmer School faculty were honored this month for their accomplishments inside and outside of the classroom over the past year.

Dr. Jon Grenier, Professor of Accountancy, is this year’s recipient of the Farmer School of Business Senior Faculty Award for Research Excellence.  Grenier’s research focuses on understanding and improving the judgments of individuals who create and use accounting information.

Grenier has published 14 studies in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and 10 articles that disseminate his research to practitioner audiences; six of these articles were co-authored with Miami students. Grenier is the recipient of a $25,000 research grant from KPMG, serves on the editorial board for Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, and as a reviewer for numerous journals and conferences.

Grenier is also a past recipient of the James Robeson Junior Faculty Award for Research Excellence and the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award for the Outstanding Junior Professor.

Dr. Michael Conger, the David F. Herche Endowed Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship and Assistant Professor of Management, is this year’s recipient of the James Robeson Junior Faculty Award for Research Excellence. Conger’s research focuses on entrepreneurs and the organizations they create.

Conger has published eight studies in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and is the recipient of two awards for his research and one award for his service to a scholarly journal. Dr. Conger serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Business Venturing and the Academy of Management Perspectives, and as a reviewer for numerous journals and conferences.

Dr. Allison Jones-Farmer, the Van Andel Professor of Business Analytics and Professor of Information Systems and Analytics, is this year’s recipient of the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award as the Outstanding Professor.

She describes her teaching philosophy as helping students develop the critical thinking skills and analytical tools necessary to function effectively as professionals. She strives to convey relevant and theoretically sound methods that assist students in translating the “right answer” into practical, actionable information.

Jones-Farmer is also a past recipient of the James Robeson Junior Faculty Award for Research Excellence.

Dr. Arthur Carvalho, the Dinesh & Ila Paliwal Innovation Chair and Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Analytics, is this year’s recipient of the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award as the Outstanding Junior Professor.

Carvalho describes his teaching philosophy as being centered on the principles of active learning. For example, in his Managing Big Data course, students investigated the impact of a Starbucks’ corporate social responsibility policy by measuring how the policy affected consumers’ sentiments toward the company. The students gathered data from Starbucks’ Facebook page, applied analytics via IBM Watson technology and published the findings in the Communications of the Association for Information Systems. Another group of students investigated factors that drive Bitcoin trading activities and presented and published their findings in the Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute.

Outside the classroom, Carvalho has been instrumental in founding and advising both the Miami University Blockchain Club and the Miami University CyberSecurity Club, and in hosting the first annual Miami University Blockchain Conference.

Dr. Eric Marinich, Assistant Teaching Professor of Accountancy, is this year’s recipient of the Richard K. Smucker Teaching Excellence Award as the Outstanding Clinical Professor.

Marinich draws on his business experience in software development and investment banking and describes his teaching philosophy as teaching future managers to make good business decisions by thinking holistically about the strategic importance of accounting in organizations. He uses the classroom as an outlet to share his enthusiasm and excitement for learning with his students and to motivate them to enjoy learning as much as he does. He believes learning should be participative and interactive, and even fun! As evidence of this, Marinich utilizes the Top Hat classroom response system and has created 25 content videos for his students to use outside the classroom.

Mr. Rocco Manzo, Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Management, is this year’s service excellence award winner.

Manzo represented the university on the State of Ohio Management & Organizational Behavior Transfer Assurance Guarantee Review Panel, the Interdivisional Committee of Advisors, served as a University Commencement Faculty Marshal, as advisor to three fraternities, and as a participant at numerous Bridges and Make it Miami events. FSB service included membership on the Committee of Advisors, the Core Integration Committee, the International Studies Committee, the Assistant Dean and Director for Divisional Advising Search Committee, and as an FSB Commencement Faculty Marshal. Departmental service includes Chief Departmental Advisor, MGT 291 Course Coordinator, and writer of countless student recommendation letters.
