Voices of Discovery: Intergroup Dialogue at Miami
Background
- Race & Ethnicity (two sections) with a balanced number of students of color and white students;
- Gender Equity (one section) with a balanced number reflecting the gendered roles of sexuality among students;
- Religion, Spirituality, and Secular Worldviews (one section) with a balanced number of religious, spiritual, and secular students; and
- Nationality (one section) with a balanced number of international and domestic students.
Each section will be co-facilitated by two trained senior/graduate students–one from each of two identity groups represented. For example, in each of the two Race & Ethnicity sections there will be one senior/graduate student of color and one white student. For more information on the theory, practice, impact, and research on Intergroup Dialogue in higher education.
On Friday, October 26, we will host several information sessions for interested students, staff, and faculty featuring our consultant and facilitator trainer, Dr. Jesus Trevino. Dr. Trevino was involved in the training of intergroup dialogue facilitators at U of Arizona, University of Denver, Arizona State, and U of South Dakota under the brand “Voices of Discovery.” Intergroup dialogues on college campuses originated at University of Michigan 30+ years ago. The U of Arizona Voices of Discovery: Intergroup Dialogue program currently trains 500-600 undergraduate students every year in Intergroup Dialogue and is credited with moving the campus climate needle forward. For more on information on Dr. Trevino.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend–one or more upcoming info session with Dr. Trevino (see schedule below).
