Travel Background

I studied abroad in London my junior year of college, and it was my first time on an airplane! My study abroad was truly life changing for me; determined to return to the UK, I proceeded to earn a Ph.D. in British history and to live in Liverpool, England for a year. After teaching as a British History professor for seven years, I transitioned to the field of international education, which has given me the opportunity to travel to over 30 countries. It's great to have friends all over the world! Along with London and Liverpool, some of my favorite destinations include Hanoi, Vietnam (friendly people!), Cuenca, Ecuador (amazing food!), Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland (fascinating politics!), and Hyderabad, India (a feast for the senses!).

Travel Tip

Be a "culture detective" when you travel! When you experience something culturally different while traveling, don't just pass judgment on it (like/dislike) and move on--that's the easy way out! Instead, take the time to process what you've experienced, and ask local people about it. The culture detective approach is a great way to meet locals, and in the process you will develop a more respectful, sophisticated understanding of their culture.
