By Rachel Berry

In this week's, Where in the World is Miami Wednesday, we meet Miranda Oates, a senior anthropology major with minors in archaeology and fashion business. Miranda is currently in New York as part of Miami’s study away program, Miami University NYC: Fashion and Retail’s Big Show. At Miami, Miranda is involved in Alpha Omicron Pi and the Anthropology Club.

Miranda Oates takes a photo in the train station in New YorkWhy did you choose the program that you did?

I wanted the opportunity to connect with leaders in the retail industry, visit New York City, and earn credits toward my minor.

Coolest place you have visited?

We visited Eileen Fisher’s Tiny Factory and had the incredible opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at their circular supply chain approach to sustainability. It was really interesting to see how they recycled garments in new products and garments.

What is your favorite part about your program?

My favorite part about the program was the National Retail Federation (NRF) conference where I was able to speak with executives from brands such as Kohl’s, Nordstrom, Levi’s, and more. It was fascinating to hear their career journeys and advice for how to best succeed within the retail industry.

How has the study away experience changed you so far?

This study away experience has encouraged me to be more bold in reaching out to employers and recruiters and to ask lots of questions. It also solidified my desire to one day live in New York City.

Catch us next week as we continue to travel around the world to feature the amazing opportunities that Miami students are taking and the experiences our alumni have had since graduating!
