University Resources, Services, and Centers

Center for Career Exploration & Success

As an online graduate student, you have access to online resources through Miami’s Center for Career Exploration & Success. Currently, these include Handshake (an internship and job search platform), VMock (a SMART resume platform), Big Interview (an interview training website), and drop-in virtual career coaching.

Graduate School Awards

Online graduate students at Miami University are eligible to apply for the Graduate Students' Achievement Award and Thesis and Dissertation Research Support (if in a thesis or dissertation program). Full-time online graduate students who are not in programs with a comprehensive tuition rate may also be eligible for additional Graduate School awards. Questions about eligibility for specific awards can be directed to gradschool@MiamiOH.edu.

Howe Center for Writing Excellence

The Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) offers several services for online graduate students, including online informational resources, virtual writing consultations, and virtual writing retreats.

Libraries

Online graduate students have access to Miami University Libraries resources. These currently include online databases, home delivery service (currently on a trial basis), digital collections, Limited Online Library Access Lending (LOLA) service, and additional graduate student resources.

Miller Center for Student Disability Services

The Miller Center for Student Disability Services (SDS) provides services, accommodations, and supports to ensure access to an equitable college experience. Learn how to affiliate with SDS.

Rinella Learning Center

The Rinella Learning Center provides opportunities for students who may need additional support to be successful with the academic rigor of graduate school. They offer workshops on study skills and developing good academic habits, as well as individual counseling sessions (which are offered virtually) on these topics. The Rinella Center also provides online self-help resources for academic skills development that you can access at any time from anywhere.

Student Counseling Service

Student Counseling Service provides services and resources to support students’ mental health and well-being. Telebehavioral counseling appointments are available to full-time online graduate students in Oxford-based programs, if they reside in Ohio. Online graduate students who are not eligible for these services can still access other resources, such as guidance for connecting with off-campus mental health services, mental health videos, the H.O.P.E. line, and virtual workshops.

Events and Networking Opportunities

Commencement

Commencement is an important tradition, and the culmination of your experience at Miami University. Although attendance at the commencement ceremony is not required, we would love for our online students to come to Oxford for this special event!

Events

In an attempt to include more online graduate students, many of our Graduate School events are offered in an online or hybrid format. For example online students can participate in our Graduate Student Development Series and the Graduate Research Forum. Online graduate students are also able to access many university events that are posted on the Miami University events calendar (those that are offered virtually have a marked with the “Virtual Event” designation).

Graduate Student Organizations

There are currently four university-wide graduate student organizations: the Graduate Student Association (GSA), Graduate Students of Color Association (GSCA), Graduate Student Pride Association (GSPA), and International Graduate Student Association (IGSA). These organizations offer options to remotely participate in some or all meetings and events; for details or more information, students can contact the President of each organization (contact information available on the GSA Canvas site). Are you an online student who might be interested in starting a student organization for online graduate students? Please reach out to Amity Noltemeyer (Associate Dean of the Graduate School; anoltemeyer@MiamiOH.edu) for more information.

Miami Alumni Connect

Miami University offers a mentorship and career platform? Miami Alumni Connect helps students succeed during and after their Miami experience through conversations and community.  More than 6,000 alumni have signed up, volunteering to advise and mentor their fellow Miamians. Make the most of the Miami network by signing up. Alumni are eager to hear from potential mentees!
