Introduce Students to the Howe Writing Center

One of the best ways to encourage your students to make appointments at the Howe Writing Center (HWC) is to request a classroom visit from an HWC consultant. Although these visits take only about ten minutes, they are enormously helpful in clarifying for students the many benefits of signing up for writing center consultations. We recommend that you schedule class visits when students have already begun working on a writing assignment.

During a class visit, the HWC consultant or staff member will go over the many kinds of support we offer, explain the consultation process, and show students how to create accounts and make appointments in our scheduling system. There will also be time for brief Q & A. For these visits, faculty must be present.

Visits should be requested two weeks in advance, using the form below. You will receive a response within a few days.

Statements for Syllabi and Canvas

You can encourage your students to use the writing center by mentioning us on your syllabus or uploading our informational module to your Canvas site. You can use and edit the short statements provided below.

Writing Center Consultations

The Howe Writing Center (HWC) and English Language Learner Writing Center (ELLWC) recognize that all writers have more to learn and provide free support to Miami students and alumni in this work. The HWC offers help with academic, personal, and professional writing at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to polishing. The ELLWC offers more specialized help for students whose first language is not English and who need particular assistance with grammar, word usage, style, and punctuation. Neither the HWC nor the ELLWC will edit your work; both will help students develop better strategies for invention, revision, and self-editing. Please visit our websites to learn more, and to sign up for a writing consultation appointment.

Writing Center Consultations for Farmer Courses

The Howe Center for Business Writing, located in the Farmer School of Business, Rm 2045, is expressly designed to support Farmer writers with their academic, personal, and professional writing. HCBW consultants can help writers with presentations, team writing projects, slide decks, or any other writing they are producing for their courses or careers. We work with writers at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to polishing. In-person appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (hours vary--see our schedule). Outside of these hours, the HWC also offers live online and written online appointments, open to all Miami writers. Visit our website for more information and to make an appointment.

For Canvas Informational Modules

We also have an informational module that you can import into your course from Canvas Commons. The module includes one page for on-campus services and one for online services, so you can include whichever may be relevant to your students and place them wherever you would like within your course (such as before a new writing assignment). To find our module in Canvas Commons, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Canvas and click "Commons" in the left, black navigation pane
  2. Search "Howe Writing Center"
  3. Click on the "Howe Writing Center Informational Module"
  4. Click the "Import into Course" button on the right
