Student Staff

The Howe Writing Center employs a team of graduate and undergraduate consultants. Our team comes from all across disciplines at Miami. Read through their bios below. If you're looking to schedule an appointment with a consultant from a particular area of study, take note of each consultant's academic discipline in bold.

Graduate Writing Consultants

Ahjah (she/her/hers) is a second-year doctoral student in the student affairs in higher education program. As a queer Black woman, she explores the intersectionality of age, gender, race. She hopes to pursue a career as a professor and researcher guided by her personal motto "College students today, colleagues tomorrow." Ahjah enjoys reading American gothic novels, writing poetry, and eating quality ice cream.

Destiny (she/her) is a second-year Ph.D. student studying composition and rhetoric. She is interested in the different kinds of relationships and communities that can be and are built using digital spaces. Recently, she’s been collaborating on a project that is putting feminist histories of rhetoric in conversation with video games. She’s also a proud first-generation college student.

Erica (she/her) is a second-year master's student in English literature. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for her undergraduate career, studying Spanish Linguistics. Her research interests include the medical humanities, performance studies, and cultural studies. Previously working in a chemistry lab, she has experience writing grants and academic papers in both the sciences and humanities. As an individual with disabilities, inclusivity drives her practices.

Karyn (she/her/hers) is a second-year MA student in composition and rhetoric. Her research interests include empathetic pedagogies, pop culture rhetorics, writing center administration, and first-year composition. She enjoys working with writers from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her cat, Eddie.

Katie (she/her) is a fourth-year doctoral student in the psychology department. Her research focuses on the effects of stress on physiological and cognitive processes. Through both her research and teaching experiences, she has gained familiarity with scientific writing, APA style and statistical reporting, and research methods.

Parisa Ad. (she/her) is a second-year English literature Ph.D. student. Prior to Miami, she worked as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Cincinnati's Writing Center. She has years of experience as an ESL/EFL instructor, and she speaks five languages. Her research interests include diaspora, language hybridity, and issues concerning identity. She is passionate about learning new things and helping her peers.

Parisa Ah. (she/her) is a first-year master of architecture student. She has been an English as a second language tutor since 2017 and is interested in interdisciplinary writing. Her research interest includes integrating computer science, machine learning, and AI with architecture.

Salma is a fourth-year doctoral student in composition and rhetoric. Her research interests include digital public rhetorics, feminist hashtag activism, and affect theories. She is familiar with diverse research methodologies and is experienced in working with second language writers across the curriculum.

Sean is a 4th year Ph.D. student in the behavioral neuroscience area of the psychology department. His research focuses on understanding more about the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction, with an emphasis on opioids. He has a particular interest in scientific writing and improving the way science is written for broad audiences and plans to pursue a career in this area. He is also president of the Graduate Student Pride Association and is proud to represent and serve LGBTQIA+ graduate students at Miami.

Tyler (he/him/his) is a first-year MA student in English language and literature. His research interests include contemporary American and British literature, animal studies, and the environmental humanities. Before coming to Miami, he worked as a WC consultant at Madonna University and Albion College. Upon graduating, he hopes to complete his Ph.D. or to start work at an animal rights nonprofit.

Wilnelly (she/her) is a first-year Ph.D. student in the geology department. Her research focuses on understanding earthquake sequences in order to better mitigate hazards in the future. As a proud Latina, she is familiar with how difficult it can be to write and communicate ideas in a second language.

Undergraduate Writing Consultants

Abbey is a sophomore with a double major in creative writing and professional writing. She is also a reader for the literary magazine Happy Captive and writes entertainment reviews for The Miami Student. She is an avid reader of all kinds of novels, specifically YA and historical fiction. After she graduates, she hopes to be editing for a publishing house.

Aja is a senior professional writing major and creative writing minor. She enjoys reading digital rhetoric magazines and reading romance manga. After graduating she would like to go on to editing or take a corporate position and further integrate effective rhetorical tactics into digital marketing.

Allison is a sophomore English literature and professional writing double major with a Spanish minor. She is also involved with Happy Captive Magazine on campus. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in editing or publishing. Outside of school, Allison loves reading fiction, watching movies, and hiking.

Ally is a first-year student with a double major in diplomacy and global politics and Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Once she graduates, Ally hopes to attend law school and eventually work for the department of state. This semester, Ally is fostering Risotto, a service dog in training. Risotto may be sitting quietly with Ally during consultations.

Ann is a junior accounting major and art history minor. Her writing interests include business writing, narrative writing, and journaling. She enjoys reading both contemporary and historical fiction and firmly believes in the importance of representation in literature.

Annah is a second-year creative writing and professional writing double major with a minor in women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Their main involvement on-campus is the literary arts magazine Inklings Arts and Letters, where they serve on the editorial staff. They're an open member of the LGBTQ+ community and hope to have a career in writing that will support the diverse, inclusive issues they care about.

Ava (she/her) is a second-year creative writing and integrated English language arts education double major. On-campus, she writes for UP Magazine. She is a proud member of the LGBTQ community and enjoys reading, movie watching, and pickleball. After graduation, she plans on becoming an author and high school English teacher.

Caroline is a first-year majoring in strategic communications and minoring in business. She plans to work in PR or advertising after she graduates and is a member of the Best Buddies club on campus. She loves spending time outside and her favorite book is It Ends With Us.

Charlie is a sophomore majoring in professional writing. They hope to work in the publishing industry and someday become a full-time author. Their favorite genre to write and read is fantasy (especially children's and YA fantasy), and they enjoy being involved in the LGBTQ+ community on campus.

Christa is a third-year majoring in linguistics and English literature with a minor in Russian. She is particularly interested in historical linguistics, medieval literature, and 19th-century literature, and after graduation, she hopes to pursue a graduate degree in linguistics. Outside of school, Christa spends her free time on poetry, piano, and petting cats.

Clara is a second-year political science and geography double major, as well as a member of the Urban Cohort. In the future, she'd like to potentially pursue a career in Urban Planning. She enjoys writing poetry as well as reading post-modernist novels.

David is a senior journalism and American studies double major. He writes and is the Sr. Campus & Community editor as well as the Entertainment Editor for The Miami Student. Outside of school, his interests are pop culture, pop music, movies, TV, and podcasts.

Elizabeth is a senior professional writing and creative writing double major. After graduation, she hopes to become a developmental editor and to one day publish her own poetry and essays.

Evan is a first-year undergraduate student double majoring in neuroscience and psychology. He is particularly interested in research, philosophy, and various forms of creative writing (poetry, short stories, freewriting, and so forth). Outside of school, he enjoys reading classic literature and journaling.

Julia is a first-year creative writing major pursuing a minor in marketing. She enjoys writing fiction stories and one day hopes to write a young adult fantasy series. Her favorite areas of academic writing are literary analyses, narrative assignments, and argumentative essays.

Kade (all pronouns) is a first-year student majoring in Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies; data analytics; and data science and statistics. Kade enjoys reading web novels and comics and is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Kathryn (she/her) is a second-year pursuing creative & professional writing majors, an anthropology minor, and the Outdoor Leadership certificate. She is interested in learning for its own sake, and obsessively pursues any topic that catches her eye. Outside of classes, she enjoys being outdoors and has a love of handicrafts, including crochet, cross-stitch, and chainmailling. Her true passion is stories. Fantasy is her favorite genre and she adores it in all formats, particularly novels and video games.

Kendra (she/her) is a senior creative writing and professional writing double major. Her writing interests include fiction and creative nonfiction, and the occasional poem as well as rhetorical writing.

Kylie is a first-year majoring in international studies with a double minor in Spanish and economics. In her free time, she is on the Miami Intercollegiate Skating team, reads a variety of fiction and fantasy novels, and loves writing poetry and short stories.

Lauren is a second-year applied linguistics, French, and French education triple major. She is interested in language frameworks and helping others interpret the structure of communication. After graduation, she plans to work in both English and French.

Lauryn is a junior with a triple major in biochemistry; public health, human disease and epidemiology; and pre-medical studies. Outside of class, Lauryn enjoys reading murder mysteries and the occasional medical research article. Lauryn volunteers with the Big Brother Big Sister program in Butler County.

Liam is a sophomore who is double majoring in international studies and Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian studies. He works as both a consultant and as support staff for the Howe Writing Center and is interested in policy and analytical writing. After finishing his studies at Miami, he plans to enter a graduate program.

Madeline is a first-year majoring in classical studies and minoring in Italian. She loves telling people’s stories, whether through interviews or creative nonfiction. Madeline also enjoys writing for her blog, The Aquila, about her college experience.

Madison (she/her/hers) is a junior with a double major in history and integrated social studies AYA education. She works as a student assistant for the Walter Havighurst Special Collections and University Archives as well as an intern at Hillel at Miami University. She is especially interested in creative writing and historical and literary analyses.

Mady (she/her) is a senior English literature and professional writing double major and a social justice studies minor. She plans on focusing on a publishing track and hopes to pursue it after graduating. She is also involved with Happy Captive Magazine.

Marie is a senior professional writing major and emerging technology in business + design minor. She plans to work in the publishing industry as an editor and loves working with writers to reach their full potential. When not writing, Marie loves reading and watching movies with her roommates (and her roommate's cat).

Melanie is a sophomore pursuing a creative writing major and a minor in cello performance. In her free time, she likes to ride horses and play games on her PS4. While her dream job is to be a novelist, she is up for any experience that involves the arts. She finds herself able to see a story in any kind of scenario and wants to bring people together with the arts.

Meredith (she/her) is a first-year English creative writing and diplomacy & global politics double major and Film Studies minor. On-campus, she is involved as a tour guide and an opinion writer for the Miami Student. In her free time, she enjoys writing realistic fiction, playing guitar or piano, watching films, or reading nonfiction.

Michel is a senior double majoring in supply chain management at Farmer's School of Business and history. Michel has plans to attend law school after he graduates from Miami. He enjoys reading American history and working with antiquities.

Reagan (she/her) is a sophomore double majoring in economics and data analytics with a minor in History. Through her experience as Assistant Editor for The Miami Student, she has gained familiarity with news writing and AP style. Reagan is an avid book lover and enjoys reading historical fiction and humor.

Regan is a first-year English creative writing major. Outside of class, she works as an editor for high school seniors’ college essays. Regan is an avid reader of contemporary romance novels and hopes to enter the publishing world after graduation.

Sophie K. (she/her) is a first-year student majoring in English literature and co-majoring in sustainability. She is ecstatic about all things reading and has a book blog on Instagram where she writes reviews on her current reads (@escapingthrureading)! Her favorite book is Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman and her favorite genres of literature include romance, fantasy, and a bit of historical fiction. Upon graduation, she plans on working in publishing houses either in editing or marketing and she is ecstatic to build a platform for her future goals by working for the HWC!

Sophie M. is a junior inclusive special education major and art therapy minor. She is interested in all things music, art, and creative writing. After graduating from Miami, Sophie plans to work in an inclusive, interdisciplinary setting with art as a focal point for the betterment of all students.

Sydney (she/her) is a second-year professional writing and strategic communication double major. Beyond academic writing, Sydney also dabbles in poetry, YA fiction, comedy writing, and songwriting for piano and acoustic guitar. Her favorite book is a tie between Looking for Alaska by John Green and Fun Home by Alison Bechdel.

Zoe (she/her) is a fourth-year marketing and professional writing double major. In the future, she plans to enter the publishing field and work as an editor at a publishing firm in New York City.
