Writing Appointments

Howe Writing Center consultant leads student writer, both standing, collaborate on a white board where "thesis statement" and "structure" have been written.

The Howe Writing Center (HWC) invites all Miami students, faculty, and alumni to schedule appointments (or what we call “consultations”) for your writing projects. You can take advantage of these consultations at any stage of the writing process.

During Fall and Spring terms, the Howe Writing Center offers on campus appointments at our King Library, Farmer School of Business (Howe Center for Business Writing), and Peabody Hall locations. Writers can choose between in-person consultants or virtual consultations, in either the live online or written online formats. Please note that written online appointments are intended for Miami regional students and online learners, not for students taking classes on the Oxford campus. We also offer a limited number of recurring appointments to graduate students working on long-term projects.

If you have any questions related to appointments, please contact Howe Writing Center Manager Kate Francis (francik@miamioh.edu).

Common Questions

What are my appointment options?

Most consultations are offered as on-campus appointments. You’ll meet one-to-one with a Howe Writing Center consultant in our King Library, Peabody Hall, or Farmer School of Business locations. We follow all campus health and safety guidance and regularly clean our consulting spaces.

For those who would rather meet with a consultant virtually, live online appointments are available. These consultations take place in real-time via video conferencing. You’ll use video, audio, chat, and a shared whiteboard to discuss your writing.

Written online appointments are available for Miami student writers who are taking online courses or who attend a regional campus. You’ll pick an appointment time, upload your writing document(s), and complete a detailed appointment form. There is no live interfacing with your consultant. The consultant reads and responds to your work, returning written feedback shortly after the end of your appointment time.

Who are HWC consultants?

HWC writing consultants are Miami undergraduate and graduate students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. You can look through our consultant bios to learn more about their majors and interests. This information may help you find a consultant you think a particularly good fit for your writing questions or tasks.

Our consultants are strong writers themselves, of course. However, they also value the writing process and enjoy working collaboratively and constructively with others. To prepare for their work at the HWC, consultants are rigorously trained in writing center theory and valued practices.

No matter who your consultant is, we’re sure you’ll find them knowledgeable, professional, and kind.

What kinds of writing can I submit for consultation?

HWC writing consultants can assist you with just about any project. Here’s a list of the kinds of writing we regularly see:

  • Papers, reports, and group projects for any course, in any department
  • Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other “creative” forms of writing (we believe all writing is “creative,” for the record)
  • Honors theses, Miami Plan capstone projects, master’s theses, and dissertations
  • PowerPoint presentations, websites, digital movies, and other non-print projects (restore when live appointments are back)
  • Cover letters, personal statements, and applications for fellowships and employment
  • Personal and professional writing projects outside of class assignments

We are happy to look at any and all career-focused documents, but we also recommend the Center for Career Exploration for specific advice on resumes.

Should I visit the Howe Writing Center or the English Language Learner Writing Center (ELLWC)?

Watch Howe Writing Center (HWC) Support Staff Liam, Molly, and Lauren explain how to choose between visiting the HWC and the ELLWC for your writing needs.

Accessibility

The Howe Writing Center is committed to helping provide accommodations for all Miami writers who have scheduled writing center consultations. To request an accommodation, or to inquire about the accommodations we can provide (i.e., viewing or accessing materials in alternative formats, using assistive technologies during an in-person consultation), please contact writing center manager Kate Francis (francik@miamioh.edu) at least 2 business days prior to your consultation. We are also happy to collaborate with the Miller Center in providing such accommodations.
