Visitors and Events

Miami University’s highest priority is the health and safety of its faculty, staff, and students and we are taking several important steps to help reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19. Despite the University’s best efforts, it is not possible to eliminate the risk of positive cases or an outbreak on our campuses.  We cannot guarantee that people present on our campuses will not be exposed to or become infected with COVID-19.  The risk of exposure and possible infection is real and present in any community environment where large numbers of people regularly interact, including college campuses.  As a result, visitors are asked to limit their trips to campus to essential visits, for their own health and the health of our community. With health and safety in mind, visitors will have limited access to certain buildings. Tours and visits will be limited/impacted.

All visitors are required to wear a facial covering while inside any campus building. They must also be worn outside at all University events (athletic events, concerts, marches), and on-campus property when maintaining six feet of physical distancing is difficult.

Facial coverings must be put on before entering enclosed or indoor spaces including, but not limited to, classrooms, common areas, conference rooms, shared office spaces, hallways, and buses.

University facilities and operations have the right to refuse entry and services to those who do not wear face coverings.

Visitors are also strongly encouraged to perform a basic symptom assessment before coming to campus and may not come to campus if they are ill, have COVID-19 symptoms, or have a temperature over 100.4.

We thank you for following our policies during these extraordinary times.

For additional information, please refer to Miami University's COVID-19 Policy.

We have examined many of the major events planned for the fall. We are sorry to announce that the Class of 2020 in-person September recognition, Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the December Commencement ceremony — all involving large gatherings and significant travel to and from Oxford by graduates, alumni, students and their families — are canceled for this fall.

We know this is extremely disappointing news, but we hope you can understand the safety concerns that have led us to these decisions.  For all of our students, their friends, families, and alumni we deeply regret the need to cancel these significant events.  For those who were intending to return for the September in-person recognition and those intending to graduate in December, we are planning an online remote commencement in December which will individually recognize all 2020 graduates – December, August and May, details will be announced at a later date.

For Family Weekend we plan to offer virtual programming, and we will share information as the schedule is finalized.  For athletics, the Mid-American Athletic Conference has delayed the start of the fall sports season with no sports starting before September 3.  The MAC and its member institutions will continue to assess the latest developments related to COVID-19 in weighing the potential impact on fall schedules.

We will follow guidelines from the CDC and the State of Ohio. Classrooms, meeting rooms, and event spaces are being assessed to reduce room capacity, and new guidelines will be posted. Even within that more limited occupancy, 6 feet of space between individuals should be maintained and face coverings are required. Outdoors, attendees must be able to maintain social distancing and/or wear face coverings. Please continue to check back for updated information.

I graduated in May 2020. How can I get a diploma cover mailed to me?

May 2020 graduates will receive an email from the Alumni Office containing a link to the Diploma Cover Mailing Request Form where they can request a diploma cover be sent to them. We will begin mailing diploma covers this fall.

Will there be a commencement program available (such as the one that would have been given out at the in-person ceremony)?

We are working on producing a May 2020 Commencement Program listing May 2020 graduates. We plan to have a December 2020 Commencement Program as well — available for viewing and download from the commencement website.
