Materials Handling Assistant

General Function

Performs a variety of tasks related to sorting and processing materials for the recycling center

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Operates a variety of equipment including bobcat, forklift, truck, baler, paper shredder, and glass crusher to process recyclable materials.
  • Unloads material at central collection point; loads material onto sorting line.
  • Sorts and identifies materials for recycling (paper, cardboard, cans, glass, plastics, etc.).
  • Performs basic maintenance and repair on tools and equipment.
  • Performs general custodial tasks including sweeping, removing trash, and cleaning equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance duties including painting and moving equipment.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to supervisor or manager

Direction Given: May occasionally monitor and train student employees

Minimum Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license. No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance
  • Ability to separate recyclable materials
  • Mechanical skills

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat disagreeable conditions. Some exposure to unpleasant elements, such as exposure to outside weather conditions, which are particularly disagreeable. Broken glass and old syringes produces some element of personal risk.
