Medical Assistant

General Function

Assist physicians and nurses by gathering basic medical statistics and preparing patients for examinations

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Take brief medical histories and vital signs of patients (blood pressure, height, weight, explanation of visit, etc.) and prepare them for examinations.
  • Assist physicians and nurses with exams (taking notes, handing instruments).
  • Perform routine laboratory procedures, give injections, and draw blood (phlebotomy).
  • Perform basic clerical duties such as answering phones, filing, light typing, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Direction Received: Reports to Nurse Supervisor

Direction Given: None

Minimum Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED and at least 6 months experience in a medical setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must obtain applicable certification within 120 days after employment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of basic medical routines and terminology
  • Knowledge of standard office and record keeping procedures

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking, standing, and lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat unpleasant working conditions and health hazards.
