Postal Services Assistant

General Function

Performs a variety of tasks related to picking up and delivering mail in an efficient and timely manner

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Conducts postal operations that include either the sorting and delivery of mail or assisting postal customers by selling stamps, money orders, or other materials and by providing information.
  • Picks up mail to be sorted and prepared for delivery at post office or at various drop-off points and mailboxes; may operate University's delivery vehicle.
  • Assists in the preparation of mail needing special handling including bulk mail, registered mail, and insured mail.
  • Prepares various financial and operational reports.
  • Supervises and trains student employees; assigns tasks; monitors performance.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to either Manager of Campus Mail Services or Business Office Manager

Direction Given: Functional guidance to a group of student employees working on an ongoing basis

Minimum Requirements

Requires high school diploma or GED and six months of postal experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Driver's license required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of postal regulations
  • Supervisory skills
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and equipment

Working Conditions

Continuous standing or walking with moderate amounts of lifting of materials weighing 50 to 75 pounds. Periodic assignments which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations.
