General Function

Performs moderately complex repair or construction of university facilities or property which require specialized training in a skilled trade

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Reviews job orders and blueprints or drawings; inspects site and consults with client; determines best method to complete project.
  • Estimates amount of materials and equipment needed to complete project; arranges for materials to be at job site.
  • Performs comlex repair or installation on University facilities and property using expertise acquired through specialized training in a skilled trade.
  • Assists outside contractors as needed; assists craftspersons from other trades as needed.
  • Maintains and cleans tools and equipment; maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • May prepare some paperwork; may maintain files.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Trades Shop-Assistant Supervisor, Manager of Physical Facilities, or other Manager of Trades/Maintenance unit

Direction Given: May provide occasional training and instruction of classified staff

Minimum Requirements

Requires nine months training beyond high school in a skilled trade and two years of experience in that trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Driver's license required. For AQT positions EPA Universal Certification required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of the procedures and equpiment of a particular skilled trade
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and/or mechanical diagrams

Working Conditions

Frequent standing and walking with some climbing and lifting of materials weighing 50 to 75 pounds. Frequent operation of equpiment. Somewhat unpleasant working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements which are particularly disagreeable. Some element of personal risk and exposure to accidents.
