Meet the Moderator

Join Rakel Keane of Horan for any or all of the sessions. 

Rakel Keane works directly with clients to design and implement customized wellness solutions that drive engagement and optimize employee health. The HORAN Health Management Way™ provides
employers with a results-oriented strategic approach to help them execute and achieve measurable outcomes related to employee health and cost containment. Rakel helps clients navigate program design and implementation, vendor selection, benchmarking and evaluation and provides recommendations based on business needs and desired outcomes.

Rakel's education: Ohio Life, Accident & Health Insurance License,  University of Florida - Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Behavior, University of West Florida - Masters of Science in Public Health, Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).

Join the powerful wellness conversation – Interpersonal resilience as a workplace wellness strategy, with the world’s leading Interpersonal Wellness Expert, Joyce Odidison, to explore the intricacies of interpersonal resilience and diversity inclusion. During our time together, Joyce will lead us into an exploration of the following questions:

  • Can diversity inclusion be used as a workplace wellness strategy in your organization?
  • Is the interpersonal resilience of employees and teams impacted by diversity inclusion?
  • Is there a connection between interpersonal wellness, diversity, and inclusion?
  • What is the implication of diversity and inclusion on mental resilience and productivity?

Sonya Bessong, TIAA

Relationship Manager, TIAA Financial Solutions

Sonya Bessong is a Relationship Manager within the TIAA Financial Solutions division at TIAA (tiaa.org), a Fortune 100 financial services organization and leading provider of asset management and retirement services for the academic, research, medical and cultural fields.

Sonya is part of the client relationship team responsible for managing the overall client relationship with our institutions by leading key initiatives that support and improving the customer experience.

Sonya began her financial services career in 1991 and has been with TIAA since 2016. She serves our institutional clients in the State of Ohio from the local Cincinnati TIAA office.

Sonya holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Dickinson College and a Master of Business Administration degree from Strayer University. She holds FINRA Series 6 and 63  registrations.

Don Koller, AIG

AIG Retirement Services-Vice President Client Relations

As Vice President of Client Relations, Don serves as a plan sponsor relationship manager for AIG’s largest plan sponsor clients in the Midwest. Don assists employers such as Miami University with the creation of communication and education strategies that inform and empower employees to take action in planning for a secure financial future. Mr. Koller has 35 plus years of experience serving plan sponsors and their employees within the higher-education marketplace. Don is a registered representative holding FINRA Series 6, 7, 24, 51 and 66 licenses, in addition to the designation of Investment Advisor Representative (IAR), and Ohio life and health insurance license.

Bruce Guiot, Miami University

Chief Treasury Officer & Chief Financial Officer, Miami University Foundation

Bruce Guiot joined Miami University in April of 2006 as the Director of Investments & Treasury Services. He has oversight of the University’s investments, treasury, and debt. Bruce previously spent nearly 16 years in the trust investment departments of Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati and PNC Bank in Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Brown University, where he studied business economics, and the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned an MBA. Bruce and his wife reside in Mason, Ohio and have two children who are both students at Miami.

Joey Payne, Cammack Retirement

Senior Financial Advisor

Joey Payne is an institutional retirement plan financial advisor based in Lexington, KY. CAPTRUST welcomed Joey to our team in 2021 from Cammack Retirement Group—a leading national, independent retirement plan consulting and investment advisory firm—where he served as a vice president and senior consultant. As a senior financial advisor, Joey is charged with specializing in helping plan fiduciaries through all aspects of their ongoing due diligence process, including investment analysis, plan design, compliance, and regulatory and process changes.

Joey has served more than 25 years in the higher education arena. In addition to his consulting experience, Joey has worked extensively with retirement programs, including 403(b), 401(a), 401(k), 457(b), and deferred compensation arrangements under 415(m) and 457(f) plans. Additionally, Joey spent 13 years as chief benefits officer of a $4 billion defined contribution plan for a large research-intensive, land-grant institution with an academic medical center. Joey received a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Business Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.

Fred Makonnen, Equitable

Division Vice President for Equitable Retirement Services

Fred Makonnen is a retirement plan sales executive with over 20 years of experience within Defined Contribution market with a focus in K-12, Higher Ed, Government and Healthcare space.

As Divisional Vice President, Fred is charged with growing market share across all Tax –Exempt DC space through a Multi-distribution channel along with managing dedicated Regional Vice presidents responsible for new business development in the western region.

Greg Springfield, Voya

Voya Retirement Services

Greg Springfield has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry with a focus in the Tax Exempt Markets. Greg joined VOYA in 2014 as Senior Vice President, Division Manager for Voya’s Tax Exempt Business in the Central Division. In his role, Greg has overall responsibility for driving business throughout the Midwest. He is responsible for Voya’s local education representatives, distribution, and managing strategic relationships. He has supervisory responsibility for 13 states and has offices in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Kansas. Greg received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Kennesaw State University and holds his FINRA Series 6, 7, 24, 51, 63 and 65 licenses and is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®). Greg currently resides in Powell, OH with his wife Teri and their three children.

Terri Buzzell, TriHealth

Director of Health Services for Miami University/TriHealth

Terri Buzzell is the Director of Health Services for Miami University. Her responsibilities include the student and employee health services provided here on campus. Terri has spent the past 24 years working in the healthcare arena, filling a variety of roles in critical care, community health, school health, and leadership. Throughout her career, she has developed a passion that focuses on prevention and wellness; maintaining this focus leads to long and enjoyable lives for the ones she serves.

Terri also serves as President for a local school board in Dayton, Ohio. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with her two teenage children and husband.

Doug Curry, Miami Rec Center

Executive Director of Rec Sports Services

Doug Curry is the Executive Director of Recreation Services for Miami University. His responsibilities include the Recreational Sports Center, Goggin Ice Center, Equestrian Center and all recreation areas on campus. Doug has been with Miami for 26 years and has held a variety of positions related to housing, bookstore, marketing and recreation

The simple goal for recreation is to offer the Miami community the best facilities, programs, staff and events possible with the resources available. Doug believes that recreation activities has the unique opportunity on campus to bridge academics, social, mental, and physical wellbeing. If students have ideas for programs/events we try to implement those ideas. We try to give the students every opportunity to enhance health and wellness.

Dorie Pappas Mitchell, Anthem

Regional Vice President – Southern Ohio Sales for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield

Dorie serves as Regional Vice President, for the Southern Ohio Sales team, for Mason-based Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio. She is accountable for the sales and renewal activities for Anthem’s large group business. Dorie and her team partner with clients to develop benefit strategies that are tailored to the unique cultural and financial goals of each client organization. Additionally, she has oversight for both employer and broker/consultant relationships in the region for her company.

Dorie has been in the health benefits industry for over 17 years, in a number of roles, such as large group underwriting, Account Management and new business sales for Anthem.

Dorie holds a Bachelors of Business Administration degree from the University of Cincinnati. She and her husband Ralph reside in West Chester, Ohio, with their twin daughters.

Carolyn Jacob, Anthem

RN, MS, CCM, Program Consultant for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield

As Wellness Program Consultant Wellness, Carolyn Jacob helps Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s large employer clients create opportunities in the workplace to improve their employees’ health and wellness. She assists clients in identifying prevalent high-risk and low-risk health conditions as well as lifestyle, pharmaceutical, and emergency room trends among their covered employees and their dependents. Carolyn also assists clients in developing multi-year worksite wellness strategies and implementing creative tactics and communications that promote healthy lifestyle behaviors. She also helps employers leverage both the many free and low-cost resources and tools that Anthem offers its clients and members, as well as, community resources.

Carolyn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) and has seventeen years of experience in clinical nursing. Most of her clinical experience was completed as a Clinician I in Chicago-based hospitals, specializing in cardiology and diabetes. She is a Certified Case Manager (CCM) and has an additional five years’ experience managing organ transplant cases. Carolyn holds a Masters in Health Promotion Management and is a Certified Trainer for the Work@Health program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Carolyn is active in the Southwest Region of the Healthy Business Council of Ohio. She has written two CE courses that have been approved by the State of Ohio on the impact of oral health on our overall health. Carolyn has also worked in the sales and account management side of the health insurance industry.

April Anderson, Cerner

Health Population Management Strategist - Client Results and Performance, Cerner Corporation

April Anderson is a Strategist for Workforce Health at Cerner. She received her M.Ed. in Health Education and Promotion at the University of Missouri and works with leadership to align their companies’ goals with well-being initiatives to support a thriving workforce. April is passionate about empowering individual’s overall well-being by supporting behaviors that build resilience and mindfulness.

Terri Buzzell, TriHealth

Director of Health Services for Miami University/TriHealth

Terri Buzzell is the Director of Health Services for Miami University. Her responsibilities include the student and employee health services provided here on campus. Steve Large, Miami University

Assistant Vice President for Student Health and Wellness at Miami University

Dr. Steve Large serves as the assistant vice president for student health and wellness at Miami University. In that role, Steve provides oversight for the following departments within the Division of Student Life: student counseling service, student health services, and the office of student wellness (which oversees prevention and education around sexual and interpersonal violence and drug and alcohol concerns).

Prior to joining Miami, Steve held leadership roles at Gannon University for 9 years, where he served as director of counseling services for 5 years and more recently led the successful integration of a combined health and counseling services department. Prior to Gannon, Steve worked at the University of Dayton as a staff psychologist and coordinator of outreach in the campus counseling center.

A Cincinnati native and licensed clinical psychologist, Steve received his bachelor of science degree in psychology from John Carroll University in Cleveland, and his doctorate in clinical psychology from Wright State University, where he was given the Diversity Dissertation Award and the Excellence in the General Practice of Psychology Award from the Wright State University School of Professional Psychology faculty. Steve is an active and contributing member to various associations pertaining to collegiate wellness. Outside of work, Steve recently adopted a puppy (Joey) and is carefully learning to become handier as he personalizes his home in Oxford.

After an illustrious career as President & CEO, Founder and Owner of IMPACT Solutions, a premier leader in the fields of Employee and Higher Education Assistance programs, Dr. Gecht (along with IMPACT Solutions) has joined forces with emerging national EAP leader, AllOne Health!

Dr. Gecht is an industry-leading psychologist specializing in the design and implementation of customized behavioral healthcare and related services for colleges, universities, school systems, healthcare facilities and corporations. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, he routinely works with top-level executives providing consultation, coaching, counseling, and strategic planning assistance. In his clinical practice, Dr. Gecht is best known for treating stress, depression, anxiety, and relationship problems. In addition, he can advise on problems related to psychosomatic illness, phobias, and motivation as well as helping individuals to enhance their self-esteem and performance objectives. Dr. Gecht is highly skilled in the areas of psychodiagnostic assessment, testing, sports psychology, and hypnosis. He has also created innovative executive selection and on boarding support initiatives, and offers specialized leadership assessment, executive coaching and counseling assistance.
