Accessibility for STEM Courses

Persons who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) are very underrepresented in STEM careers although they are as interested in science as other students during high school. Part of this discrepancy between interest and employment is due to the actual and perceived inaccessibility of STEM undergraduate courses, in particular laboratory courses. Independence Science has worked with Vernier Software and Technology to make their scientific data collection solutions, the LabQuest and LoggerPro software, accessible to BVI students. In this workshop, we will introduce the Talking LabQuest and demonstrate how it can be used to provide greater independence to BVI students in lab courses. We will also discuss other challenges in STEM accessibility.

Apple Accessibility: Reaching All Learners

In this session, you'll discover new ways Apple is making exciting technology available to all learners as part of its ongoing commitment to accessibility. For over 30 years, the Mac has shipped with dozens of accessibility features built-in, at no additional cost, allowing it to be used right out of the box by people with disabilities. Now, with the iPad, Apple continues to set the standard by taking accessibility and learning to a whole new level.

Creating Accessible Canvas Courses

Information Session: In this session, we'll discuss accessibility support for two aspects of course design in Canvas: (1) The accessibility features built into the Canvas LMS; (2) Additional strategies and recommendations for instructors and course designers when they build courses in Canvas, (i.e. accessible document formats, use of images, video captions, etc.).

Workshop: In this hands-on session, participants will learn about the existing accessibility features in Canvas and course design tips for creating accessible content. Also, participants will have the opportunity to work in groups with the support of an instructional designer. Group categories include creating accessible course pages in Canvas, making accessible PDFs, creating accessible PowerPoint presentations, and choosing accessible multimedia content.

Powerful Literacy Supports with Read&Write

In this session, attendees will learn how to begin utilizing new literacy support software, available to all Miami students, faculty, and staff. Read&Write is a toolbar for PCs and Macs that interacts with internet browsers, Microsoft Word, PDFs, and just about anything open on a computer screen providing powerful supports, such as speech-to-text, visual/talking dictionaries, highlighting tools for extracting research, and much more. The session will provide an introduction to how the software works and basic customization features while beginning exploration of the most widely used tools on the toolbar.

Simple and Complex Accessibility Analysis

During this workshop, we will examine some inaccessible and accessible simple web pages and some inaccessible and accessible complex, "rich" controls, looking at how each performs for the variety of users and abilities. We will then dig in and take a deeper look at the code that makes up these pages and controls and discuss why they work or fail to work. Finally, we will discuss some resources and tools that may help developers both identify and build solid, accessible pages and complex web controls.

Video Closed Captioning in YouTube

This hands-on workshop will cover the creation and editing of closed captions using the tools provided by YouTube, including the pros and cons (mostly cons) of the automatic captions feature. The use of existing transcripts, uploading them to YouTube, and synchronizing them to the video clip's audio track will also be covered. Training documentation will be provided.
