Brief description of project: Our department requests funding to replace the 21 mid-2011 iMac computers used by students in MJF classes, student media organizations and by those who need a computer equipped with software to complete creative work.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: No

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: The iMac computers now in use cannot run the software our faculty would use in teaching: the Adobe CC suite. Updating to new iMacs will give students the benefit of consistent software as they move from this teaching space to other lab spaces in this building as well as the CIM lab in King Library.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: This lab is our only teaching / learning space that has computers too old to run Adobe CC which our faculty use to teach web design, page layout for newspaper and magazine, video and audio editing - those multimedia tools necessary for our students to prepare for their internships and starting their careers.

How will you assess the project?: Success of this project will be immediately evident as faculty and students begin using software most effective for course content.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: Yes

If funded, what results did you achieve?: Instance - CAS Dean's allocation funded our new "UHD cameras for Advanced Production" proposal in the amount of $12,600. We purchased 3 new Panasonic video camcorders for our upper division students' use. Prior to this purchase, our students had access to our digital SLR cameras to produce their class projects - and while that is a valid format, the new camcorders are designed specifically for video production. This allows more time for students to focus on their creative work.

Did you submit a final report?: Yes

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: CAS-IT staff will perform software updates as required. MJF technical staff will respond to day-to-day issues as part of their normal duties. No additional costs are anticipated.
