Brief description of project: We would like to purchase a 20 TB RAID array for archiving the best of our student work so that it can be used as the basis for post-production exercises in our classes.

Does this project focus on graduate student education or graduate student life?: No

Describe the problem you are attempting to solve and your approach for solving that problem.: We have terabytes of past student video projects that include their raw footage. We would like to archive these on RAID array and use them as the basis for editing exercises that we can use in a variety of classes, including a new post-production course. Specific sequences for exercises would be downloaded to individual edit stations as needed. We have tried cloud-based media archives but due to the size of the files and the speed needed to access them, we found this inefficient. In addition the raid can be used for editing the yearly Capstone Pictures film.

The criteria state that technology fee projects should benefit students in innovative and/or significant ways. How would you describe the innovation and/or significance of your project?: Most Post-production exercises are based on professional footage which is expensive and also often incomplete. Using scenes shot by students is unique in that it offers more possibilities for creative problem-solving. This is a significant project in that it potentially will provide training exercises for 200+ students in our beginning and advanced video and digital film classes.

How will you assess the project?: The Ultimate assessment would be evaluating students growth in learning how to edit film. Students could provide portfolios of work (or we cold collect it) from beginning classes through their capstone projects. Evaluations of the classes in which the footage is used would also provide information for assessment.

Have you applied for and/or received Tech Fee awards in past years?: No

What happens to the project in year two and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc.? How will these be funded?: Will continue to be used. No further funding.

Budget: Hardware

Hardware Costs: 1959.00

What is the total budget amount requested?: 1959.00
