Identity and access management: A success story still in the making

by Elizabeth Parsons, IT Services

Well folks, we did it.

As of 10 a.m. on March 28, 2024, our new identity governance and administration (IGA) tool is live.

The best thing about this platform is that when we have done our jobs correctly, users will not notice it is working. The IGA is truly the “behind the scenes” management of identities, access, and support for those things. It will simply work.

Password management: New and improved!

As of the switchover, the MUnet Password Utilities portal has a new face! You can go to MiamiOH.edu/password and see for yourself. This new look gives us a more streamlined, in-brand, easy-to-use way to change passwords, manage recovery options, and reset your password if you forget it.

Please remember, however, that if you had secret questions as your only recovery option before March 28, in the event you forget your password, you will have to contact IT Help and verify your identity (with copies of your ID cards or driver’s license) before they reset your password. If you have a current recovery (non-Miami) email or phone number set, you can reset your password immediately with no help desk intervention!

Curious what the new system looks like? Check out our YouTube walkthrough of how to change your password in the MUnet Password Utilities portal!

Future tense: Entity accounts

Do you remember in February when we turned on a login interrupt for Miami faculty, students, and staff for the purposes of syncing your accounts to RapidIdentity? We now need to do the same thing for entity accounts!

In the coming weeks, we will be implementing a login interrupt that will pause the login process for a person logging in to an entity account they manage – with a request to click the “Sync Account” button.

Please note that you will be allowed to “skip” this step and go straight to your Miami service, but taking the extra couple of seconds to log in again and sync your entity account will help us immensely and will keep you from having to recover your account. Thank you in advance!

Next steps: Looking at strategy

The next thing on the schedule for identity and access management is determining what the next couple of years are going to look like for the program. A huge part of IAM is the strategy – what we’re going to implement when. With the Workday implementation on the horizon and many more IT projects coming down the pike, it’s going to be important for us to make sure IAM is primed to support these projects from an operational standpoint.

The launch of this platform is the culmination of years’ worth of work for teams in IT Services and partners around Miami. It’s a huge step toward a modern identity management system, and we’re excited to share it with you.

We’re excited to celebrate the launch of RapidIdentity at Miami, and we hope you are too. This is the first step – much more to come in future months. For more information please visit our website at MiamiOH.edu/IAM.

And remember: You can’t spell Miami without IAM.
