Informed Choice for T/TT and TCPLs

Updated May 17, 2023

On May 17, 2023, the State Employment Relations Board (“SERB”) tallied all ballots received in the Miami Tenure / Tenure-track and TCPL faculty unionization election. The results indicate that a majority of eligible voters have voted in favor of FAM / AAUP representation.

We expect SERB to review and officially certify these election results during its next Board meeting on June 8. Collective bargaining cannot officially begin until SERB has certified these results. In the interim, the University will work to establish a negotiating team and keep our university community, including all faculty and staff, informed of important updates when and where possible.

When the time comes, the University will negotiate in good faith and is committed to supporting our faculty, students, and our mission of academic excellence. While we can't predict how negotiations will play out or how long they will take, we expect it will take some time to establish our first faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. In many cases, negotiation of an initial contract can take up to or beyond one year.

University administration has always recognized faculty's right to organize and respects the thoughtful consideration our faculty members have exercised throughout this process, along with the election results.

General Questions

Where are we now in the process of faculty unionization at Miami?

We are awaiting certification of election results. On May 17, the State Employment Relations Board (SERB) tallied all ballots received in the Tenure/Tenure-track and TCPL faculty unionization election and announced that a majority of voters have voted in favor of FAM / AAUP representation. As part of the process, SERB will now review and officially certify these election results, which we expect to happen during its next board meeting, scheduled for June 8.

Which faculty are included in the union?

Once SERB has reviewed and approved these election results, all Tenure/Tenure-track and TCPL faculty will be represented by AAUP / FAM in collective bargaining.

Can individual faculty members opt out of union representation?

Ohio law mandates that because a majority of eligible Tenure/Tenure-Track and TCPL faculty who voted in the secret ballot election voted in favor of representation, all Tenure/Tenure-Track and TCPL faculty will be represented by FAM/AAUP as members of the approved collective bargaining unit. You may decide not to join the union or become a member, but your terms and conditions of employment will still be covered by the collective bargaining agreement.

When will collective bargaining begin?

Collective bargaining cannot begin until after the election results have been officially certified by SERB, which we expect to happen during its next board meeting, scheduled for June 8.

Who will lead negotiations on behalf of FAM / AAUP?

If you have questions about FAM / AAUP’s negotiating team, reach out to your FAM representatives.

How long will negotiations take before an initial contract is put into place?

At this time, we can’t predict how long negotiations will take. That said, the University is committed to bargaining in good faith, and we expect it will take some time to establish our first faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement.

As a faculty member, who can I contact with questions about the Tenure/Tenure-track and TCPL faculty union or terms and conditions of my employment?

Ohio law limits what Miami University, as an employer, can now discuss with union-represented faculty and when. University administration will continue to keep all faculty and staff as updated and informed as possible as we work together to accomplish our mission. If you have immediate questions about the faculty union or terms and conditions of your employment, contact your FAM representatives.
