University honored for commitment to employee well-being for its Healthy Miami program, other initiatives
As a 2026 Healthiest Employer in Ohio, Miami University is among the organizations recognized for a commitment to employee well-being.
The Healthy Miami initiative, tobacco cessation classes, the popular hydration challenge, on-site mammogram vans, and a weekly movement club are just some of the reasons Miami earned this distinction. And while that recognition is rewarding, it also serves as a driving force for the future, said Natalie Skoumbros, the university’s director of benefits services.
“We are moving in the right direction and doing the right things for our employees,” Skoumbros said. “We are investing in our well-being programs, focusing on building a retention climate, and working hard to enhance those programs.”
Healthiest Employers is an awards program that honors organizations taking a proactive approach to employee health. By utilizing Truven, a healthcare data and analytics platform, Healthiest Employers uses a 1-100 scoring rubric that evaluates six areas of organizational health and wellness.
Filling out the assessment was extremely beneficial, Skoumbros said. It identified many positives already implemented at Miami, while also providing a starting point for potential areas of growth.
“It helped challenge ourselves and gave us some great ideas for the future,” Skoumbros said. “There are new ideas out there, and we are always looking for new programs that would be right for Miami.”
Communicating existing programs to employees is also key. Annual benefits fairs and well-being events are helpful in connecting employees to those resources.
“It’s not only about having great benefits but also letting people know they can access them,” Skoumbros said. “It’s about communication and meeting people where they are. We want employees to know what they have and how to get those resources.”
Skoumbros also stressed that employees could reach out to the Office of Human Resources Management with suggestions.
“I would love to hear what anyone would like to participate in,” Skoumbros said. “We care about our employees, both at work and outside of work. We want them to thrive.”
