Empowered: What If Women Ruled The World?

Empowered: What If Women Ruled The World?

An Exhibit at Miami University Middletown in Middletown, Ohio

Submission Deadline: March 19

Judy Chicago started this journey to freedom in the art world. Chicago has worked passionately over decades to uplift the voices of female artists, and with her 1979 project, The Dinner Party, she “broke down barriers for female artists, spearheading a new style of shameless expression and exploration of femininity” (CRFashionBook).

An enormous set back in the art world is that “87% of major works in museums today are by men” (NMWA). Numerous influential female creators like Judy Chicago and the Guerrilla Girls are fighting these obstacles by calling out bias, advocating for gender equity, and challenging society with such thoughts. Asking things like, “What if women ruled the world?” (CRFashionBook). Even though these stereotypes have gotten better through the years,“ contemporary women artists still face many obstacles and disparities” (NMWA).

Contemporary female artists are making strides all over in the art world, like Zoé Buchman who is working on art that “reflects upon modern themes such as feminism, identity, mortality, equality and society’s cultural norm” (Medium). Being able to make art that is unapologetically real and open is a freedom that female identifying individuals of today are fighting to make the norm. In Empowered , we want to see art that is challenging the barriers so unfairly set up for female creatives.

Let this be the time of women. The time that we are not overlooked. That we are powerful creators who are unstoppable. Come be a part of a mighty group of women artists who aren’t afraid to show their true colors and create without restraint.

Empowered is open to female artists, student and professional, ages +18, within 200 miles of Middletown, Ohio.
