Communication Studies

Communication is broadly defined as the process people use to generate meaning through messages across a variety of different contexts, channels, and cultures. The Communication Studies major provides students with a strong core foundation in the study of communication, while also providing students advanced studies in particular communication contexts.

Communication skills (including oral, written, small-group, and interpersonal) are routinely identified by the Association of American Colleges & Universities and other organizations as the top skills employers seek in college graduates. The BA in Applied Communication will help students further develop and study these skills, as well as provide in-depth study of communication theory and research methods.

Through intensive study of communication and elective courses, graduates will be well prepared for their professional careers and work in a variety of industries. In particular, a BA in Applied Communication allows students to work in settings in which interaction with other people, groups, or the general public, are key parts of the day-to-day requirements. 

What classes would I take?

At Miami, students majoring in Communication Studies must complete a core set of classes and then have the opportunity to select additional classes in communication contexts and advanced electives.

According to Outlook Occupational Handbook, between 2012-2022 the average job growth for all Ohio occupations will be 8 percent, while the job overall job growth for occupations related to communication will be 9 percent. Given the broad nature of communication studies and the ability to apply this degree to a variety of different positions, graduates should have a variety of different job opportunities available to them, across several different industries.
