Professional Experience
Prior to coming to Miami, Debbie taught at the Good Samaritan Hospital College of Nursing and Health Science. Debbie worked for Good Samaritan Hospital as a staff nurse on a variety of units. Her experience included telemetry/ICU Stepdown, Occupational Health, the Coronary Care Unit, and Emergency Room. Debbie remained as a Staff PRN nurse to inform her teaching upon coming to Miami. Debbie has also worked on a Long Term Care floor at the Daniel Drake Memorial Hospital.

Service
Debbie’s focus in service is to Communities and to the nursing student. Debbie began her service with the health education of the underserved undocumented and Latin America population in Hamilton Ohio. She enabled students to also provide community service to this population by providing interpretative skills, performing health skills and interactive ongoing education for the children of the participants. Debbie has led numerous Study Abroad opportunities for students to provide service to the people of The Gambia, West Africa, Nicaragua and Belize. She successfully led the first team post COVID of Study Abroad Students to an International Destination. Debbie is an active member of the University Community and serves on the Miami University Institutional Review Board and other University and Regional Committees. Debbie has also provided service to the Nursing Profession in numerous ways, however most notably being an Item Writer for NCLEX and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, three times. Debbie provides departmental service by serving as the chair of the curriculum committee, the administrator of the ExamSoft and Simple Syllabus initiatives in the department of nursing. She actively assists students in success with testing skills across the curriculum.
Scholarship
Debbie’s research interest include the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning of test taking skills and success of nursing students. This also includes classroom learning strategies to improve the student’s ability to perform clinical judgment. Promotion of student understanding of diverse health care systems, challenges and delivery of health care to underserved populations with the assistance of International Service Learning in countries of Nicaragua and Belize. This follows here at home in recognizing and serving underserved populations with the provision of Community Layperson Health Education.
