Steve Griffith
Steve began his journey at Miami Hamilton in 1968, as the Hamilton campus was opening. As one of our original students, he tells the story about attending classes as drywall was being hung, and how everyone took it in stride. That first winter, Steve played for Miami Middletown, under coach Lynn Darbyshire, as the Hamilton campus did’t field a team that year. He later did join the MUH Chiefs under Jim Adams, both as a basketball player and a golfer. After attending a few classes throughout the years at Miami Hamilton, Steve returned to school after a career at General Motors. He says that at age 37 and the closing of the GM plant, that it was time for a change and a goal of becoming an elementary teacher. In 1988 he spoke to the athletic director about having a golf team for the spring, and was told that in order to have a team, they needed a coach. So Steve became a player/coach and in the following year, Gayle Kist-Kline became the athletic director and Steve became the Assistant AD. He graduated from Miami University at age 40 and coached golf for one more year until his teaching schedule conflicted with coaching. Steve started his long drive career in 2001 and in 2005 he became a ReMax
World Long Drive Champion defeating NBA Hall of Fame member Rick Barry. He continues to compete actively and finished second in his age division last year.
