Miami Regionals Veterans Honored For Academic Achievements

Miami Regionals student veterans were honored for their academic achievements at a special ceremony held Friday evening, May 13 at Miami Hamilton.

The evening marked the second presentation of the Specialist Matthew Nichols Stephens Veterans Honor challenge coin, presented to Miami Regionals student veterans who achieved a 3.2 GPA or higher.

The Honors coins, and Miami Regionals veterans challenge coins, were made possible by a gift from the Wetzel family, and were presented to the veterans by his father, Miami Hamilton faculty member Richard Wetzel.

Born in 1981, Stephens was a combat engineer with the 82nd Airborne Division and served with his unit in Afghanistan. Following his honorable discharge he joined the National Guard to continue his service until his passing in 2013.

The event was coordinated by J.P. Smith, Regional Coordinator of Veteran Services and a retired US Army First Sargeant, and members of the VOALC staff.
