Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band Hosts An Irish Celebration! Concert on March 11

A free concert celebrating Irish music will be performed by the Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band (SOSB) under the direction of Chris Brandenburg, Conductor, and Dan Nichols, Associate Conductor. The concert is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University Regionals' Middletown campus.

The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band will put everyone in the mood for Saint Patrick's Day in the middle of March by starting the concert off with Leroy Anderson's Irish favorites, "The Irish Washerwoman" and "The Minstrel Boy" followed by "The Girl I left Behind."

After Anderson's jaunty tunes Dennis Clason, SOSB trombone player, will lead the band in the Scottish Folk song, "Ye Banks and Braes O'Bonnie Doon." Dennis has been playing in the band since moving to the Cincinnati area in 2014. Dennis retired from the New Mexico State University where he was an Associate Professor of Statistics. Dennis, in addition to receiving a Ph.D. in Statistics, studied music including choral and instrumental conducting.

The band will end the first half of the concert with another of Leroy Anderson's Irish tunes, "The Rakes of Mallow."

Following a brief intermission, the band will continue with its Irish celebration by playing "Moorside March from A Moorside Suite," by Gustav Holst.

You won't want to miss Gary Gilroy's "Ave Marie Possa Nostra Mae." Dan Nichols will lead the band in an Austrian march, "Under the Double Eagle," by Josef Franz Wagner. An Irish concert wouldn't be complete of course without, "Danny Boy," Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry" and Grainger's “’Shepherd's Hey“’ English Morris Dance." We will conclude the concert with a crowd pleasing favorite you won't want to miss.
