Shelter Programming Specialist

Number of Positions Available: 1

AmeriCorps Service Details
Program Description

This change agent's primary responsibility will be to plan and implement programming focused around the positive development of shelter residents. Many of the residents we provide temporary housing for have been directly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in multiple facets. In 2019, a study was conducted finding that 59% of U.S. households were one missed paycheck away from becoming homeless.

While we are awaiting this study to be replicated in a post-pandemic America, we can only suspect the issue has amplified. Providing regular, weekly programming that focuses on career development has the potential to open the door for them to move forward toward self-sufficiency in a post-pandemic world.

Specific Tasks The change agent will be responsible for creating and scheduling intentional programs aimed at fostering positive development for adults experiencing homelessness. Their assigned role will include researching best practices and models, coordinating the facilitation of existing programs through community partners, preparing and delivering presentations for relevant topics (i.e., financial literacy, resume building, mock job interviews), and engaging directly with residents to identify needs. The change agent will establish and regularly update a community board to be located in the shelter indicating class topics and dates. They will be expected to measure specified outcomes/objectives while collecting relevant data.
Fundraising Responsibilities The change agent may spend less than 10% of their efforts on creating visualizations and other publicity materials for the Serve City fall hunger awareness fundraiser.

The inequity that exists for individuals experiencing homelessness has been widening in recent years with the population continuing to grow, fueled by the recent Covid-19 pandemic. During a recent Coalition in Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO)annual conference, an issue arose regarding the use of private funding being directed to the distribution of propaganda depicting individuals experiencing homelessness in a false manner. The change agent who fills this role will work to turn the table on this trend.
Specific Tasks The change agent will be responsible for developing and executing a positive, educational narrative revolving around the theme of understanding homelessness. They will provide a fresh perspective on who the homeless truly are and provide support in marketing campaigns.Their assigned role will include building meaningful relationships with adults on-site experiencing homelessness, developing PR materials utilizing various multimedia outlets to share their stories, and challenging the false narratives being portrayed regarding the homeless population.
