Center for Aquatic & Watershed Sciences (CAWS) Guidelines

Users of this facility are reminded that all University infection control policies apply, including:

  • Face masks covering the nose and mouth are required to be worn in any shared space indoors.
  • At least six feet (2 meters) of distance must always be maintained between users.
  • Persons entering this facility must be free of recognized COVID 19 symptoms including: fever, sore throat, anosmia, chills, generalized muscle pain, or shortness of breath.

Facility use policies

  1. Maximum occupancy of Pearson Hall 019 is 3.
    • Subroom 019A is included in this limit. Max 2 in 019 (main lab) and 1 in subroom 019A.
    • Anyone other than authorized personnel must contact the lab manager, Tera Ratliff, to enter the lab. For example, anyone wanting to use the microbalance (which is normally available to any Miami staff or student), must contact the lab manager this in advance.
  2. Required PPE in addition to masks:
    • Main Lab and subroom:
      • Face covering that covers both nose and mouth required at all times.
      • Use gloves, lab coat, eye protection as appropriate.
      • When using the microbalance, a face shield must be worn.
  3. Authorized personnel
    • Tera Ratliff (CAWS Lab Manager)
    • Mike Vanni (Professor of Biology and CAWS Director)
    • Zak Schultz (Graduate Research Assistant)
  4. Please sanitize materials or equipment used by appropriate method determined by material:
    • Books, paper, and other porous, chemically intolerant materials: Remove from circulation for 48 hours.
    • Surfaces: Wipe clean with a solution of either:
      • 70% alcohol (ethyl or isopropyl)
      • 10% bleach (not for use on stainless steel)

General policies

  1. All users of this facility must monitor their temperature before arrival. If you have any symptoms (temperature above 100.4F, cough, chills, etc) or have been in close contact with somebody with COVID-19 in the past two weeks, you should not come to campus or enter the facility.
  2. Laboratory work may only resume when appropriate PPE is available. All users must agree to wear a face covering (must cover mouth and nose) in shared spaces and to wear clean gloves when working at shared equipment. Physical distance according to current CDC guidelines must be maintained at all times.
  3. When working at high use pieces of equipment (such as the microbalance), a face shield must be worn in addition to required face covering and gloves. The face shield should be sterilized prior to and upon completion of work.
  4. Due to the likelihood of further disruption of work due to a resurgence or shortage of PPE, no “irreplaceable” samples should be prepped in advance of the day of the run.
  5. All work spaces and equipment are to be sterilized between uses or at least once daily. Any shared spaces and/or items should be sanitized prior to use and upon completion of work. This includes, but is not limited to, door and drawer handles, writing utensils, outer surface of equipment when possible, bottles, bench spaces, and faucets. Appropriate disinfecting solutions will be provided. Preferred disinfectants for this lab are sanitizing wipes and 70% alcohol solution. Soaps should be avoided. Hand sanitizer will be provided.
  6. Until further notice, there will be only one person in the lab at a time. There will be a table in the hallway outside the lab for no-contact supply pick-up and sample drop-off. Please email ahead of time to set up a time.
  7. Use of equipment will be allowed through special request only. Please email ahead of time to ensure the lab space is available.
  8. Remote work: Any work that can be done remotely, must be done remotely until it is safe to resume normal business.
  9. Lab training: All researchers are only authorized to conduct work they are currently trained to do. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis when training can be conducted online or with proper social distancing and PPE.
  10. All meetings, tours, etc. will be conducted remotely.
  11. These guidelines will be in effect until the state and university indicate it is safe to loosen restrictions.
