Miami University’s Suicide Prevention Team and the Student Counseling Service will sponsor a weeklong campaign to spread awareness about suicide prevention and as well as resources to improve mental health and self-care.

Suicide Prevention Week (Sept 25-Oct 1, 2017) will include numerous activities culminating with the “Out of the Darkness/Suicide Prevention 5K Community Walk,” starting at 2:00 (registration at 1:00) at Uptown/Memorial Park on Sunday, October 1, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and numerous Miami University student organizations and departments.

The week also will feature a Garden of Hope with opportunities to write hopeful messages on rocks to those in emotional distress, a Student Wellness Tent, the Body Project workshops, meditation sessions, some free Rec Center fitness classes and a FlourishMIAMI workshop on positive psychology and mental health.

All activities, held at various locations across campus, are free and open to the public.

The Suicide Prevention Team consists of representatives from the Student Counseling Service, the Office of Student Wellness and the Office of Residence Life, as well as Miami faculty, staff and students from various mental health-focused departments and organizations. The team’s mission is to educate the campus community about suicide prevention efforts to reduce and prevent suicide and mental health concerns among students and the community.
