Family Weekend 2021

Family Weekend 2021

Miami University’s first- and second- year students will soon experience their first in-person Miami Family Weekend. The 2021 edition of the event looks a little different from past Family Weekends, but the core purpose remains unchanged.

“Family Weekend is a great opportunity for parents to check in on their students’ experiences during the first few weeks of the fall semester,” said Mark Pontious, director of parent and family programs. “We intentionally plan a wide variety of activities and encourage families to engage with as many or as few as they want.”

Family Weekend was held virtually last year due to the pandemic, and this year some of the events have been moved to an outdoor setting. Saturday night’s headline entertainment has typically consisted of a comedian at Millett Hall. This year, families will head uptown for the first ever Uptown Family Fest, featuring Mwenso & The Shakes. Another example is the longstanding Honors College Open House, which will occur outside Peabody Hall on Friday afternoon. Many indoor events will look similar to previous years, except with all participants wearing facial coverings.

“Bringing families to campus often gives them a sense of peace because they can picture where their student is every day,” said Pontious. “I’m excited to once again see students showing their parents their favorite place to eat and introducing their parents to their friends.”

Events kick off on Thursday, September 30 with a volleyball game against the University of Akron, and continue throughout the weekend until the afternoon of Sunday, October 3. The full Family Weekend schedule can be found on the Family Weekend website.
