Safety Over Breaks

In a small college town like Oxford, just about everyone knows that students leave the city between academic terms and on university breaks (i.e. Thanksgiving or spring break). Thieves are likely to know the dates and times of year of these breaks and may take advantage of empty student homes. You should take extra precautions in protecting your house or apartment against burglary to reduce your risk.

Crime Prevention

  • Take your valuables with you. Take pictures of valuables you aren't taking in case they are stolen.
  • Double check locks on doors and windows, including any basement/ground level windows. Leave curtains and blinds closed.
  • Do not hide spare keys in places outside.
  • Temporarily stop your mail and newspapers using the U.S. Postal Service Hold Mail Service
  • Do not announce travel plans on your voicemail greeting or answering machine or post a note on your door that you are away.
  • Let neighbors help.
    • Make plans for trash cans to be removed from curb if needed.
    • Let them know they are free to park in your driveway while you are away.
    • Ask them to contact you if anything appears suspicious.
  • Consider keeping your outside lights, especially those around exterior doors on.
  • Know who the last person out of your house will be and make sure they understand that they are responsible for locking up your residence.

Vacant House Checks

The Oxford Police department free vacant house checks. Complete the Vacant House Check Form online.

Cold Weather Breaks

Do not turn off your heat. Set your thermostat no lower than 60 degrees to prevent freezing pipes. Ask your landlord for specifics and review your lease, as many leases state a minimum degree for heat as well.

Parking During Breaks

Remember the City of Oxford has a 72-hour parking limit. Do not leave your car parked on a city street. Cars parked on streets for longer than 72 hours are subject to citation and towing.

Students with a valid Miami parking permit can park their vehicle in the Ditmer lot. If you do not have a parking permit, a temporary permit can be purchased from the Parking Office. This permit will allow you to park in the Ditmer lot during the break.
