 First-Year Experience Undergraduate Associate Program

 

Undergraduate Associates in first-year experience courses (e.g., UNV 101, BUS 106, CEC 101) serve as peer mentors to the newest Miamians. As participants in the UA program, students must work a minimum of 37.5 hours over the course of the semester assisting an instructor with the planning and implementation of a first-year experience course. No prior leadership or mentoring experience is required to apply for the FYE UA position. 

Undergraduate Associates for first-year experience courses

    • support first-year experience courses and serve as undergraduate teaching assistants
    • provide valuable perspective, input, suggestions, and guidance to the newest Miamians
    • earn one credit hour for the experience through the EDT 310: Applications of Peer Education course and a notation on your transcript
    • receive training to enhance knowledge and skills related to leadership, communication, identity and diversity, and collaboration
    • learn from and work with a faculty/staff mentor
    • serve in a mentoring role that will positively impact new Miami students

2022 FYE UA Selection Timeline

  • March 15, 2022 - applications available
  • April 24, 2022 - priority application deadline (FSB students should apply by this date)
  • June 9, 2022 - final application deadline (to receive placement by mid-July)
    • note: UA applications will remain open as needed until all positions are filled
  • mid-July, 2022 - UA course placement notifications

Priority consideration for the first-year experience course UA role will be given to those upperclass students who apply by Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 11:59 pm. However, applications will remain available through June 9, 2022 or until positions are filled. Nominate a Student for the FYE UA Position

Do you know a student who would make a great Undergraduate Associate (UA) for one of the first-year experience courses (UNV 101, BUS 106, CEC 101, etc)? If so, fill out the form below. Each nominee will receive an email encouraging them to apply and indicating that you have nominated them for the role.

Nominate a Student to be a FYE UA

Required Course for FYE UAs - EDT 310: Applications of Peer Education

All first-year experience course UAs will be enrolled in a 1-credit hybrid (online + in person) course to support training and education around peer mentorship. This 1-credit course is required for the FYE UA role. Those UAs returning to the position will have the option to receive 1 independent study credit, and will have the opportunity to serve as a UA mentor.

The first meeting of EDT 310 will take place the the weekend prior to classes starting in the fall. Additional information about this training session will be provided in mid-July 2022.

Returning UA Mentor Program

FYE UAs returning to the role for a second or third year may elect to serve as a UA Mentor. UA Mentors serve as guides and support systems for first-year UAs. Indicate interest in the mentor program and contact Alexis Roach, Assistant Director of Orientation and Transition Programs at roachak@MiamiOH.edu with any questions.
