College of Arts and Science

Welcome to the College of Arts and Science

The College of Arts and Science (CAS) is Miami’s largest academic division, housing more than 60 majors, 10 co-majors, and 50 minors. Program areas represented in the College of Arts and Science include: humanities, languages, natural sciences, mathematics and statistics, and social sciences.

This page starts with an overview of CAS and CAS requirements, then information about how to help your student prepare for their academic advising appointment. When you are finished with this page, head back to the Family Orientation page to continue with the next section of content.

Review these quick notes and helpful documents that will be useful as you learn about the College:

CAS Requirements Overview

Before helping your student prepare for their academic advising appointment, it’ll be important to learn about advising in the College of Arts and Science in general. The video below outlines the CAS advising philosophy and structure and provides information about the CAS Advising office. Students have information about scheduling their academic advising appointment in their orientation Canvas site.

In addition to the learning about academic advising in CAS, you should understand your student's academic requirements in the college, especially as you and they think about the courses they plan to take in the fall. The video below provides an overview of the CAS requirements, including information about the Global Miami Plan (GMP).

Helping your student prepare for their CAS academic advising appointment

It’s time to help your student prepare for their CAS academic advising appointment. Families of all CAS students should watch the first video (Part 1) below, followed by the part 2 video that suits your student's major:

  • If your student is majoring in University Studies (undecided), you should watch Preparing for Your Academic Advising Appointment - Part II (University Studies).
  • If your student has a declared major, you should watch Preparing for Your Academic Advising Appointment - Part II (Declared Majors).
