The mission of the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education is to enhance and enrich pre-health education at Miami by providing the resources, information, and support that enable students interested in a career in healthcare to make informed decisions about their goals and to develop a plan to achieve those goals.

First Steps

What is the best major for a pre-health pathway?

We encourage your student to pursue any major that is of interest to them. It should be something your student would be happy with if the pre-health pathway doesn’t come to fruition. Professional school admissions committees are open to any major, but they may ask during your student's interview why they selected that major. While your student can pursue any major they’d like, they should meet with they pre-health advisor to discuss the necessary coursework for their program of interest. Here are some majors of Miami graduates who have recently started medical school:

  • College of Arts and Science: Biochemistry, Biology, Biological Physics, Chemistry, English, German, International Studies, Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Psychology, Sociology, Spanish, Zoology
  • College of Creative Arts: Art
  • College of Education, Health and Society: Public Health, Kinesiology, Nutrition
  • College of Engineering and Computing: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • Farmer School of Business: Finance, Human Capital Management and Leadership

Does my student need to retake the courses for which they’ve received AP credit?

We recommend all pre-health students who have received credit for AP science courses retake these courses at the college level. Healthcare-related professional schools (medical, dental, PA, etc.) don’t always accept AP credits, and they generally want to see graded coursework. It may benefit your student to retake these courses, as they are typically the foundation for upper-level science classes, and they may help strengthen your student's GPA.

AP credit in non-science coursework, including statistics and calculus, is typically fine. There may be restrictions, however, depending on the specific schools to which your student chooses to apply.

Is there a math requirement to take Chemistry or Physics?

As part of the pre-health sequence, your student needs to take CHM 141 and PHY 161 at some point during their undergraduate career. Both of these courses have a minimum requirement for your student's ACT/SAT math score and therefore may require you to take a college-level math course prior to enrolling in the course.

  • For CHM 141, your student needs a math ACT score of 22 (or SAT math sub-score 530) or higher. Otherwise, they need to complete MTH 025 or MTH 125.
  • For PHY 161, your student needs a math ACT score of 26 (or SAT math sub-score 610) or higher. Otherwise, they need to complete MTH 125.

Premedical (and Pre-Health) Studies Co-Major

What is the Premedical Studies Co-major?

The Premedical Studies Co-major is designed as a roadmap for the necessary coursework a student needs in preparation for a healthcare-related professional program (medical, dental, PA, etc.). It is not a standalone major; it must be added on to an existing major. You should be thinking about what you’d like to pursue as a primary major.

There are benefits to the co-major, including a degree audit report (DAR) that tracks your student's progress in the pre-health curriculum, including the only place your student can view their science GPA (BCPM: biology, chemistry, physics, and math). Additionally, students who have declared the co-major receive the Mallory-Wilson Center (MWC) weekly newsletter with any special announcements related to pre-health. They are also added to the MWC Canvas page, where a variety of pre-health resources can be found. All students in the co-major are assigned a pre-health advisor and show as pre-health to any other advisors with whom they may be meeting.

What does the Premedical Studies Co-major entail?

The curriculum was developed based on common professional school requirements and includes two seminar courses. PMD 101 is taken in the first semester of the first year and focuses on what it means to be a pre-health student, the process for applying to medical/professional school, what is needed to be a strong candidate, and resources on campus to assist your student with this journey. PMD 301 is taken the spring semester prior to applying (traditionally junior year) and gives an inside look at the application process, including lectures from admissions representatives about filling out the application, writing essays, and interviewing.

Resources for Premedical and Pre-Health Students

What is the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education?

The Mallory-Wilson Center (MWC) is a Center focused solely on providing assistance, programming, and resources to pre-health students. Our mission is to provide the resources, information, and support that enable pre-health students to determine their professional goals and develop a comprehensive plan to achieve those goals.

What support services are available for pre-health students through the Mallory-Wilson Center?

A full-time pre-health professions advisor is available 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, and via email anytime. The center also provides resources to help students build a strong application for medical or professional school and prepare for the application and interview process. Regular programming brings students together with admissions representatives, healthcare professionals, and other individuals. The Professional School Fair and Health Careers Week are two of our largest annual events. The MWC also offers mock interviewing, application reviews, shadowing and autopsy programs, scholarships, and more.

What professional development opportunities are there for pre-health students?

The Mallory-Wilson Center (MWC) develops and plans a variety of pre-health programs contributing to the professional development of students. Additionally the MWC offers a preceptorship program which pairs you with a physician over multiple days so your student can shadow all aspects of the profession, including patient visits, procedures, and administrative duties. The program also develops mentorship, providing you with a professional contact to reach out to with questions and letter of recommendation requests. These mentors have helped past students find internship opportunities, as well as obtain admittance into a professional program. There are also opportunities for your student to network with healthcare professionals, employers, and admissions representatives, including one-on-one meetings, fairs, and networking events. The MWC also co-sponsors many training opportunities, including Scribe training and Stop the Bleed classes in collaboration with student organizations.

Courses for Premedical and Pre-Health Students

What is PMD 101 and when does my student take it?

PMD 101: Explorations in Healthcare is a seminar course your student will take during their first semester at Miami as a Premedical Studies Co-major. This course introduces the Mallory-Wilson Center (MWC), reviews what it means to be a pre-health student and what can be expected over the next few years, helps your student understand what it takes to be a strong applicant for healthcare-related professional school (medical, dental, PA, etc.), and facilitates connections with resources around campus. The course involves a few activities to encourage self-reflection and exploration, but relies heavily on guest lectures and programming around campus, including a professional panel discussing a variety of healthcare-related pathways. While the majority of students in this course are “pre-med,” it is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in other healthcare fields (e.g., Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant). This class is a requirement for the Premedical Studies Co-major.

What is PMD 301 and when does my student take it?

PMD 301: Navigating Healthcare Professional School Admissions is a seminar course taken the spring semester prior to when your student plans on applying to a healthcare-related professional program (e.g., medical, dental, PA). This course features admissions representatives from professional programs as guest lecturers, focusing on filling out the application, writing personal statements and essays, and interviewing. As part of the course, your student will complete a mock application and personal statement, and participate in a mock interview. Your student also have an opportunity to meet with a physician one-on-one to discuss their application and complete a mock interview.

What other PMD courses are there?

We also offer two seminar courses for your student's third and fourth years of study:

  • PMD 320: Topics in Healthcare (Medical Specialties) is typically offered in the spring semester. This 1-credit hour seminar/discussion course helps pre-health students discover differences among various medical specialties. Student groups will research a specialty, present their research to the class, and lead a discussion on the specialty. The following week, a physician specialist will share their experiences in the profession. Some of the specialties featured in this course have included: Interventional Pulmonology, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics (MedPeds), Primary Care/Family Practice, Emergency Pediatric Medicine, Radiology, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Urology, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Neuro-oncology
  • PMD 410: Issues in Healthcare is a 1-credit hour seminar/discussion course typically offered in the fall semester, during which pre-health students explore contemporary issues in healthcare. Student groups will research and lead discussions on selected topics. Alumni physicians will present on other important healthcare issues. Some of the weekly issues that have been featured in this course include:
    • Mental health in medical school / how to succeed in medical school
    • Problems facing primary care physicians
    • The opioid crisis
    • Addressing end of life/physician-assisted suicide
    • Retail medicine / healthcare for profit
    • The anti-vax movement/vaccine compliance and education
    • Medicine in the era of pandemics; COVID-19
    • Combating antibiotic resistance
    • Patient safety; nosocomial infections
    • Residency issues; training & career options
    • Difficult medical patient-physician decisions; pain management
    • Physician extenders - the team approach to the practice of medicine
    • Making a correct diagnosis; physicians are not infallible
    • Issues facing an aging society; managing vs curing illness
    • Preventing burnout; balancing career and family; women in medicine

Next Steps and Contact Information

What courses should my student sign up for?

All incoming pre-health students should complete CHM 141, CHM 144, and PMD 101 when it is offered (typically fall semester). It’s important to enroll in Chemistry during the first year, as your student must complete a year of General Chemistry, a year of Organic Chemistry, and a semester of Biochemistry before taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in your junior year. Other coursework (including Biology) is dependent upon your student's major, college credit plus (post-secondary/dual enrollment) completed in high school, and their professional program of interest. Other possible courses during the first year include ENG 111, STA 261, and PSY 111 and 112.

Where is the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education?

The Mallory-Wilson Center is located on the first floor of Pearson Hall (home to the departments of Biology and Microbiology), and across from Hughes Hall (home to the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry).

As you pass through the front door and by the DNA double-helix column, you’ll be able to see the first floor commons area where students often study between classes. When you look to the left, you’ll find the Mallory-Wilson Center. Both Tailyn and Dr. Carlin have offices there, and our colleague Linda Helling is there to provide additional assistance.
