Embracing and Committing to Diversity

The MU SCS Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology embraces the diversity of our student body, interns, staff, and training activities.

MU SCS is committed to outreach and developing strong connections with marginalized groups on campus.

As a training site we are dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment for interns to explore intersecting identities and how they impact clinical work. Appreciation of a broad range of diversity is infused throughout training, and it is a strong part of our mission as well as the mission of the university.

Students

  • Miami University is located in the Midwest and has a student population that is predominately White. Ethnically diverse students make up approximately 16% of the student population, while international students make up approximately 7%. Active efforts to increase diversity within the student body are ongoing.
  • MU SCS sees a larger proportion of diverse students than is represented in the general student population. We serve students with diverse identities, including: LGBTQIA+, African American, Asian American, Latinx, Native American, Appalachian, international, low-income, spiritual/religious, first generation college, invisible and visible disabilities, veterans, and non-traditional students. 

Interns/Training

  • We have a firm commitment to provide excellence in multicultural training; mentoring interns in developing a complex understanding of their own intersecting identities, competence in multicultural theory and skills, programming that contributes to a campus community that embraces and affirms diversity, and professional practice that reflects these values.
  • Our interns are valued for their diverse and complex identities which enhance the vibrancy of our center.
  • Interns who fit well with our center are those who emphasize socio-cultural exploration and are committed to social justice.
  • Our site trains interns to become ethically and culturally sensitive psychologists who value life-long growth and learning.
  • There are many levels at which interns may become involved in diversity work, from participating in outreach and consultation, becoming a part of DAWG (our diversity workgroup), and/or providing direct clinical service.
