Miami University defines Service-Learning as “an experiential pedagogical practice that uses action and reflection to meet needs and enhance learning through mutually beneficial, reciprocal partnerships." This practice infuses course content with community service. As a result, Miami students are able to gain real world skills and enhance their learning while contributing to the community.

The Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service supports faculty in the process of service learning course development through:

  • Service learning course designation
  • Development of service learning course proposals
  • Professional development regarding best practices in service learning
  • Community partnership development and sustainability
  • Collaboration with other university service learning faculty

Service Learning Promotion and Tenure

In 2012, Miami University Senate adopted new language to the MUPIM (Section 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 of the Promotion and Tenure Guidelines, page 3) that acknowledges Service-Learning in all three areas – teaching, research and service.
