Approved Programs

An Approved Program is a transfer- credit program (semester, winter or summer) in which the host universities or study abroad providers bill the students directly. Because students are not paying Miami tuition, they are unable to use their Miami scholarships. These programs are not Miami campuses and are not facilitated by Miami professors. Students from across the United States (not just from Miami) participate in Approved Programs.

These institutions tend to provide American-style support services and orientation, health and safety support, arrange housing, and facilitate course offerings and registration. Sometimes the institution will have a study center in the host location where students attend courses, and sometimes the institution will partner with a local university where students will take courses

Approved Programs are Good for Students Who:

  • Are Out-of-State students and/or do not have Miami scholarships that significantly lower the tuition cost.
  • Like to meet new people. Students could have the opportunity to meet local students and other students from around the U.S. who are participating in the program.
  • Would like to fulfill major or minor requirements while abroad. Approved programs offer a larger variety of locations and course offerings than other Miami semester programs.
  • Would like to study abroad in a location that Miami does not currently offer in their program offerings.

FAQ

Are these programs more expensive because I cannot use my Miami scholarships?

Not necessarily. Please be sure to review the financial information and program costs with your Education Abroad Advisor to see what kind of program is more cost-effective for you. Oftentimes, the program provider will host scholarships that students can apply for.

Will my credits automatically transfer back?

Credits taken abroad will transfer back as long as you request that a transcript be sent to Miami at the end of your program. Whether or not these credits will fulfill graduation requirements will be determined by your Consortium Agreement/Transfer Credit Approval Form. For more information on how to complete this form, please contact your Education Abroad Advisor.

Will there be other Miami students on the program?

We cannot guarantee that there will be other Miami students on these programs. It is likely that you could be the only Miami student on the program. Other program participants would be students from other institutions across the United States.
