Meet the ISSS Staff
For the orientation program, all international students will be placed into small groups led by an International Peer Orientation Leader (iPOL). iPOLs are current Miami University students who can answer questions about campus life, academics, transitioning to Miami, and many other topics. Feel free to ask the iPOLs any questions you have about being a student! We hope that you have a great orientation experience and are interested in applying to be an iPOL in the future.
Hello everyone! My name is Emily Abas and I am a rising junior double majoring in Media & Communications as well as East Asian Languages and Cultures. I was born in Guangxi, China and was adopted and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. My interests include anything soccer related and of course, getting to know all of you! My goal coming to college was figuring out what I truly wanted to do in life. I currently work four jobs to explore my interests and gain experience, and that is how I chose my majors.
I understand how scary it can be coming to a new country alone but if I were to give you all one piece of advice, it would be to remember that many around you are feeling the same way. Just making one new friend will make this place feel a little more like home. I can't wait to meet you all and safe travels!
Hello everyone! My name is Lucía and I'm from Almería, a city located in the southeastern coast of Spain. I'm majoring in engineering management. On campus, I'm part of Miami's fashion and lifestyle magazine and I'm also involved in Greek life. Studying abroad can be challenging, but most importantly, ENRICHING! Get out of your comfort zone, explore your passions and get involved on campus! Miami is thrilled for you to grow in every aspect here.
Hi everyone! My name is Abby Baumann and I'm a junior English Language Arts Education major from Hilliard Ohio.
One goal I had set for myself before coming to Miami was to find a balance between academics and social life. Before college, I had been so focused on my academics that my social life was minimal and I was feeling burnt out. Once at Miami, I found a mentor who helped me see that I needed to take care of myself by putting in the time to do things away from academics. I joined a service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega (APhiO) that allowed me to give back to my community through service work while making new friends.
One thing that I would stress to any new student coming to Miami is to find a balance that works for you and ask for help—we are all here to help you.
Hi! My name is Tanaya Bhatkar. I am an international student from Pune, India. I am a part of a student organization on campus called Miami Activities and Late Night Programming. We host an array of events during the semester that I hope all of you can attend. I would advise all incoming international students to be open to starting a conversation. A lot of my strongest connections here have been through introducing myself in a public event. I hope you are ready to start this new chapter!
I am Huan Dang, second year Computer Engineering from Dalat, Vietnam. I am the Head SEAL Ambassadors and I work with 700+ student organization on campus. I love honey and pineapple on my pizza. A piece of advice that I have for my fellow underclassmen is to wash your sheet and pillowcase at least once every two weeks.
Hi everyone! My name is Valerie Do and I'm a junior double majoring in Marketing and Emerging Technology in Business and Design. I'm from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Currently, I'm a member of the business fraternity Pi Sigma Epsilon. I am also a student assistant at the Performing Arts Series, where I help bring artists around the world to Miami. In my free time, I usually go get some gains at the gym, get food with my friends in uptown, play ukulele, and sing alone in my room. My advice to you when coming to Miami is to take your time to get adjusted. Don't compare yourself to others because everyone has their own route and is so different from each other in college. I'm so proud of you! You got this!
Hi everyone, my name is Michelle Ebu and I am a second-year Biomedical Engineering major with a minor in Neuroscience. It is my first time being an iPOL and I am excited about meeting each and everyone of you. I am currently the Vice President of the Nigerian Students' Association at Miami, a HAWKS Peer Health Educator, Global Ambassador, and a member of the Undergraduate Student Advisory Council of my department. These roles have taught me so much here at Miami University and I hope you all can find something you enjoy while you're here on campus. My advice to you is to try everything until you find your thing and don't be afraid to talk to people. You all will have an amazing time here!
Hi everyone! My name is Nitisha and I'm currently a second year biochemistry and premed major. I came to America from Nepal eleven years ago at the age of seven. Coming to Miami, I wanted to get out of my shell more; therefore, I reached out and started joining clubs in order to meet new people. I think that's what I would advise you guys(as cliché as it sounds): don't be afraid and put yourself out there. I hope you like it here and I cannot wait to see you guys here at Miami!!
Hello! I'm Nghia (Martin) Le from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I'm a senior majoring in Integrated Mathematics Education with a minor in Computer Science. This would be my 5th time as an iPOL, so you can tell how much I love (and hopefully experienced in) helping international students transition into American life and education. I look forward to meeting everyone and hope you find your home here at Miami.
My name is Anastasija Mladenovska. I am a second-year international student from North Macedonia majoring in Political Science, Philosophy, and Russian and Post-Soviet studies. As I slowly wrapped up my first year at Miami, I realized what a great journey this has been for me!
One of my most cherished experiences is the community I have found at Miami, the relationships I have formed with my professors, and the tremendous care and support I have received from everyone on campus. During spring break, I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Washington D.C. with the Government Relations Network and I just started my new job as a supply chain intern at the Armstrong Student Center.
I am a very passionate individual about all sorts of things and Miami has allowed me to pursue this through an abundance of opportunities. I am very excited to welcome you all on campus. Embrace yourselves fully in this experience and enjoy it!
My name is Ginevra Pascale and I am a Junior here at Miami. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio but originally moved to the USA from Italy in 2008. I am pursuing degrees in Human Capital Management and Leadership as well as Italian Studies. A club I'm involved in on campus is the Italian club, which I run with friends I studied abroad with. I love spreading my culture. One piece of advice I would give is to get involved as soon as possible. It really helped me make friends and feel like I was a part of the campus community.
Hey everybody! I'm Kayla and I'm a fourth-year education major from Cleveland, Ohio. I love to snowboard, read, and, most of all, socialize. This is my second year as an iPOL and I absolutely cannot wait to get started. My goal going into Miami was simply to make memories with new people and new activities, and being an iPOL has definitely helped me achieve this. My advice for ALL students is to be a "yes" person. Say yes to new friends, new foods, new activities, everything!
Hey folks, my name is Emmanuel Acheampong (He/Him), I'm from Accra-Ghana. I am a doctoral student in the Educational leadership department. I serve on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Graduate Student Advisory Board. As a member of the DEI Advisory Council, I am able to advocate for minorities on campus and support the need for equity and inclusion so that students from all walks of life feel accepted and respected.
I'm enthused to be working as an iPOL to welcome and share my experience as an international student with incoming International students. I am a highly gregarious person who love making new friends. In my past time, I enjoy listening to music, reading and traveling. Finally, just so you know, Miami university is home away from home, so feel free to make new friends, be sociable and take advantage of all the campus facilities and resources towards your academic success. I gladly welcome you all to Miami University. Have fun.
Hi folks, my name is Parisa and I am originally from Iran. Currently, I am a PhD student in the Literature program at Miami University's English department. I have also been working as an iPOL for the past two years, and I really enjoy the work I do.
When I'm not immersed in my studies, I love spending time with friends and meeting new people from all walks of life. Learning about different experiences and hearing people's stories is something that brings me great joy. In my free time, I like to explore new hiking trails, especially during the beautiful autumn season when the colors are magical.
I am a firm believer in celebrating our individuality and being proud of our accomplishments, no matter how big or small. We all have something unique and valuable to offer to the world. So, let's embrace our differences and celebrate what makes us who we are!
Hi everyone! My name is Atheer, and I am a graduate student from Saudi Arabia. My favorite things to do here in the USA are traveling and exploring new areas, something I encourage all new students to do. Traveling enables you to grow and learn new things.
I advise incoming students to take every opportunity to learn, be open to differences, and embrace where they came from. Miami offers great resources to learn; take advantage of that! I can't wait to work as an iPOL to welcome and help new international students transitioning to our beautiful university, Miami!!
Hi, my name is Bolaji, my pronouns are her/she. I am currently a chemistry graduate student at Miami University, department of chemistry and biochemistry. I am from Nigeria, and I am the last child of six children.
I love traveling, reading, sewing, and cooking. I would love to go to as many countries as possible with my husband ( I am also married to my friend of 10 years, and I kind of take friendship and relationships seriously.)
I'm Yi, a graduate student studying exercise and health. I'm from Changchun, China. I came to Miami two years ago as a transfer student and I really like the campus. In spring you can study under the cherry blossoms near the Armstrong building, and in autumn you can admire all leaves turning into golden color in Miami natural areas just behind the Western Campus dorms.
My advice is don't hesitate to make friends during the orientation as this will make your school life more colorful! I'm looking forward to seeing you all!
I am Oluwaseun Olubodun, a Ph.D. student in the Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology Program, and I am from Nigeria. I am the President of the Ambassador Fellowship, the Campus Fellowship of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) here in the Miami Oxford campus.
I enjoy playing host and welcoming people. I enjoy having people around me, and I am interested in changing the narrative and creating a welcoming environment for all new international students. I am a part of a community that can hold your hands while you settle into your new environment.
One piece of advice for international students is to be a part of a community. Being in isolation would not help. Find people who can understand you and help you understand the new terrain in which you have just found yourself—especially people who have passed through the same hurdles.
Miami is a welcoming place, and I am sure you will enjoy your stay here. Coming to college in Oxford, Ohio, will be a wonderful experience for you.
Hola! My name is Nanci Reyes. I am from Mexico City and currently I am pursuing a PhD in geology. I study volcanoes from Mexico and Canary Islands. I enjoy going outdoors but also some indoors activities. My main hobbies are cooking, boxing, biking, watching tv shows, reading, and dancing/listening to music!
I hope all you guys make Oxford a special place for you, and that you enjoy your time in Miami. Welcome!
Hello everyone! I am Krishna, a doctoral student at the Department of Sociology and Gerontology. I am from Nepal and have traveled to Japan, South Korea, and India. The environment at the university is excellent, and everyone is welcoming. Every semester, there are many travel opportunities with many students, and I visited Cincinnati, where I got to meet students with diverse backgrounds. We enjoyed exploring Cincinnati city, and I tried ice skate; it was fun. Likewise, I have been a member of one club at the university, and being in the club enhances my interpersonal and networking skills.
Lastly, I suggest you search for people you may know in Miami and start building connections, which will help you settle down quickly and start your education smoothly.
I welcome you all to Miami University.
