Joining a retreat in-person at the HCWE

In-person retreat attendance is available for up to 15 people. We'll follow campus health and safety guidance and expect all attendees too as well. Spots are first come first served, so sign up as soon as you can!

In-person logistics

Those attending in person, should sign in at the Front Desk of the HCWE suite in King, then find an open table in the HCWE classroom or writing center space. An HCWE staff person will be on site to answer questions and provide short writing consultations as requested. Although we can't offer food or drink this semester, we're able to provide power outlets, a large work area safely distanced, and quiet. We'll announce stretch breaks during the morning and afternoon as well as a 1-hour lunch break.

Current Safety Protocols: Miami's current COVID safety protocol requires that everyone wear face coverings indoors at all times, regardless of vaccination status, except as exempted under the university’s COVID-19 policy (e.g. when working in your office alone, when in your residence hall room). Miami has also requested that groups not eat or drink together indoors, so we will not be offering coffee or food for in-person attendees.

Here's what to expect after you register:

  • Within a day after registering, you will receive a Google Calendar invitation from the HCWE. Accept and put the invite on your calendar.
  • The day before the retreat, you'll receive a reminder email.
  • The day of the retreat, check-in at the HCWE Welcome Desk. Verify your info on our sign-in sheet and enter a goal/intention for the day.
  • After checking in, find an open table in the Center and get started writing!
  • For those who would also like to virtually join other writers in a video chat (no sound), the retreat's reminder email and the calendar invitation will both provide a link.

Joining a retreat remotely

Many in the Miami writing community attended retreats virtually during the 2020-21 academic year. We want to keep offering a remote attendance option for those who prefer it. We'll make sure you still experience the kind of camaraderie in-person retreats provide by offering a video chat room, scheduled breaks, and optional check-ins throughout the session.

Virtual logistics

Although we can't provide the usual food and drinks, we'll still structure the retreat in a way that keeps you motivated to write. You will start the session by stating a goal and you can report back on that goal at the end. We'll build in regular breaks with guided stretches and movement, including an extended one for lunch. We'll host virtual breakout rooms, too, for anyone who'd like to work quietly in the company of other attendees.

Here's what to expect after you register:

  • Within a day after registering, you will receive a Google Calendar invitation from the HCWE. Accept and put the invite on your calendar.
  • The day before the retreat, you'll receive a reminder to check-in the next day between 8:30-4:00, with a link for doing so.
  • When you're ready to join the retreat, click the link in the reminder email. That link will take you to a check-in document to verify your info and enter a goal/intention for the day.
  • After checking in to the retreat, get started writing.
  • For those who would also like to virtually join other writers in a video chat (no sound), the retreat's reminder email and the calendar invitation will both provide a link.
