How to Schedule
To schedule an appointment with a Howe Writing Center consultant, you’ll need to create an account and log in to WCOnline. WCOnline is the scheduling and management platform we use at the Howe Writing Center (HWC).
In your WCOnline account, you’ll be taken to a page that shows a scheduling grid arranged by date, time, and our consultants’ names. The default schedule on WCOnline will show our in-person hours in King Library. To look for availability at other sites and modalities, click on the drop-down "schedule" menu in the upper right hand corner of the page. White boxes in the grid indicate available appointments. Dark green boxes in the grid indicate appointments that are currently taken. Clicking on a white box will take you to an appointment page, which we ask you to fill out in detail.
If you have any questions about scheduling an appointment with us, please contact HWC Center Manager Kate Francis (francik@miamioh.edu).

Common Questions
What different kinds of appointments do you offer?
Most consultations are offered as on-campus appointments. You’ll meet one-to-one with a Howe Writing Center consultant in our King Library, Peabody Hall, or Farmer School of Business locations. We follow all campus health and safety guidance and regularly clean our consulting spaces.
For those who would rather meet with a consultant virtually, live online appointments are available. These consultations take place in real-time via video conferencing. You’ll use video, audio, chat, and a shared whiteboard to discuss your writing.
Written online appointments are available for Miami student writers who are taking online courses or who attend a regional campus. You’ll pick an appointment time, upload your writing document(s), and complete a detailed appointment form. There is no live interfacing with your consultant. The consultant reads and responds to your work, returning written feedback shortly after the end of your appointment time.
Can I schedule more than 1 appointment?
Sure. You may schedule 1 appointment per day and up to 2 appointments per week.
For 3 appointments or fewer, just make the appointments each individually. If you would like to sign up for once-a-week appointments with the same consultant for 4 or more weeks, you might also consider requesting a recurring appointment.
What if I can't find an appointment that works for me?
We have a waiting list on WCOnline for just this reason. Here’s how to add yourself to it:
- On the WCOnline scheduling grid, click "waiting list" in the lower right-hand corner of the date when you would like an appointment.
- Enter your email and the range of times you are available, then click "add to waiting list”
We move through the waiting list on a first-come-first-serve basis. You will be emailed if an appointment becomes available. Remember, Written Online Appointments do not require you to be present during the appointment time. You'll just need to have your materials uploaded by the appointment time.
How do I cancel my appointment?
We understand that things happen and sometimes you might not be able to make your scheduled appointment. We kindly request that you cancel your appointment in advance if you know you can’t attend. We often have a waiting list for appointments, so by cancelling you are enabling another writer to take your spot.
Here's how to cancel:
- In your WCOnline account, select the drop-down menu under your name in the top left corner.
- Hover over "My Appointments" and select the appointment you wish to cancel.
- Scroll to the bottom of your appointment form and click "Cancel This Appointment" in red.
If you do not attend your appointment and you did not cancel in advance, then the appointment will be marked as “missed.” This has implications for our cancellation policy (see next dropdown).
Is there a cancellation policy?
Yes. If you know you won’t be able to make your appointment, we ask that you cancel it as soon as possible. If you do not attend your appointment and you did not cancel in advance, then the appointment will be marked as “missed.”
After 2 "missed” appointments, WCOnline will temporarily lock your account from making new appointments. You'll need to contact HWC Manager Kate Francis (francik@miamioh.edu) to restore your account. After Kate restores your account, you can go ahead and schedule your appointment.
