Anthony James, director of Miami University's family science program, will become interim vice president for institutional diversity, succeeding longtime leader Ronald Scott, who is retiring.

James, an associate professor in the department of family science and social work, was co-chair this year of the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) task force that is proposing ways to advance Miami’s longstanding commitment to equality and social justice. The committee worked throughout the summer and will release its recommendations soon.

“It is an honor to continue the powerful legacy of this mission at Miami University,” James said. “Our institution is positioned to lead in this exciting time of greater awareness and transformation in our nation for justice and equality.”

His research and teaching interests focus on, among other things, youth development, Black families, and truth and reconciliation. Before his academic career, James served as a children’s services worker, an informational analyst, and as an Engineer Officer in the Missouri Army National Guard.

“Anthony brings vast experience from within and outside of academics,” Crawford said. “With his leadership on the DEI task force, he will be able to quickly move us into implementation of the DEI recommendations in the coming year to elevate our campuses’ inclusive excellence.”
