  • Class of 2016, BA Biochemistry
  • University of Louisville School of Dentistry

What have you been up to since graduation?

I am a 2016 Miami biochemistry grad and currently in my 4th year of dental school at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. I started dental school the summer after graduation, so I have been a full-time professional student for the last three years.

How has being a graduate of Miami Chemistry and Biochemistry helped your career?

Being a graduate of the Miami chemistry and biochemistry department has helped me immensely through dental school. My post-grad biochemistry course felt like a review after the knowledge I gained in my Miami biochem courses. Additionally, having a chemistry/biochemistry background has made it easier to learn and understand some of the properties of dental materials that we must know (compared to the classmates of mine who had different majors).

Any advice for those who would like to have a career in science and who are considering a chemistry or biochemistry major?

For those who would like to have a science-based career, namely in healthcare, I think having a biochemistry major gave me a solid background for the future courses I had to take. The major incorporates many of the biology courses that are an important foundation of scientific knowledge, while focusing on the chemical and mathematical approach to science that I enjoy.
