Careers in French, Italian, and Classical Studies

Why Study French?

With the economic outlook uncertain, many students and their families are concerned about job prospects after graduation. We are happy to say that you need not choose between your love for French and your ambitions to succeed professionally. We've set this portion of the website aside as a resource for our students as they plan their careers.

The materials begin with a brief video introduction by Marysia Wowro, who compiled the information in this section. This is followed by a series of three PowerPoint presentations. The first two discuss the importance of French and French-speaking countries in the world today. The third goes into more detail about internship and job opportunities for French-speakers. You'll also find a downloadable brochure that summarizes much of this information and a link to other useful websites.

We try to keep this information up-to-date. If you find errors or have further ideas, please let us know by contacting the Department office. We are also in the process of expanding this site to include interactive features such as a job forum for our students and alumni. You should also visit Miami's Career Services for more general information.

New Career Oriented Course

As part of the College of Arts and Science's efforts to provide career development opportunities to our students, CAS301 is being offered this winter semester on Mondays from 5:30-6:20pm. A description of the class is below. Contact Dr. Christopher Makaroff if you have questions about this course.

CAS 301 is a 1 credit hour course offered by the College of Arts and Science to help students explore and more fully understand the critical links between a strong liberal arts undergraduate education and diverse career paths including choices in business, government, and the private, non-profit sector. This course is particularly relevant for students who are majoring in the liberal arts areas, i.e. students with majors and/or minors in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences or any of the interdisciplinary programs. Through selected readings, facilitated discussions, and experiential exercises students will examine a variety of foundational skills and dispositions that are all grounded in experiences within their majors and minors in the College of Arts and Science, including: critical, strategic and analytic thinking; writing competence; quantitative literacy, transformative leadership; and professional ethics and integrity. Students will also explore practical applications of those skills and dispositions in diverse careers. Student work in the course will be facilitated, in part, by mentorship from distinguished College of Arts and Science alumni who have established successful careers in business, government or the private-non-profit professions. These alumni will interact with students both virtually and through an "alumni in residence" program.
