The word “geography” may not be in the job title, but the market is hungry for those with geographical knowledge and geospatial and planning skills. Our graduates find purposeful jobs with local, state, or the federal governments; consulting firms and corporations; or non-profit organizations in:
- natural resources management and environmental protection
- urban planning and sustainable development
- geospatial data science and analytics
- real estate development, corporate strategic planning, locational analysis

Our geography department provides students with access to diverse opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting.
Faculty and Student Research
Our faculty are active and leading scholars who mentor student research in critical areas of science and policy:
- Humans and the Environment: climate, biodiversity, natural resources;
- Cities and Planning: urbanization-planning, power and place;
- Global and Sustainable Development: sustainability, globalization, diversity;
- Geospatial Science: Geographical Information Science (GIS), Earth observation data.
Experiential Learning
Students learn best by doing, so we help them apply their knowledge and skills through engaging real-world places and people beyond the classroom.
- Field Courses: experience diverse places firsthand;
- Client-Based Projects: work with communities to gain experience;
- Internships: gain professional experience with partner organizations.
Geography Alum
Our geography alum, Christine Daley '18, is putting her analytical skills to work in criminal investigations, bringing a unique perspective to law enforcement.
