What is a Mock Interview?

A Mock Interview Appointment is conducted between a Miami student interviewee and a professionally-trained peer career coach or volunteer alumni interviewer. Mock Interview Appointments are available in Fall and Spring Semesters.

A mock interview teaches you how to:

  • Answer difficult questions
  • Develop interview strategies
  • Improve your communication skills

How to Prepare for a Mock Interview Appointment

  • Upload an updated resume into Handshake
  • Dress in professional attire and be punctual
  • Make sure to reschedule or cancel your appointment if your availability changes to avoid a penalty for Late Cancellation/No Show.

Scheduling a Mock Interview

Listed below are the steps to take when scheduling a mock interview appointment.

How to Schedule

Schedule your Mock Interview Appointment on Handshake.
  • Select either Peer Career Coach or Alumni Volunteer
  • Select mode, date, and time
  • Mark your calendar for the date and time you selected
  • Reschedule or cancel your appointment if your availability changes to avoid a penalty for Late Cancellation/No Show

Fall and Spring Semester Times

  • Mondays – Thursdays: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Fridays: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • In-Person appointments are held in the Career Center (0045 Armstrong Student Center)
  • Virtual appointments are conducted through Zoom (Miami IT help for Zoom)

No Show/Late Cancellation Policy for Interviews

A missed mock interview due to a no-show or a late cancellation reflects poorly on you and all students at Miami University. You may cancel your interview online through Handshake up until 11:59 p.m. two business days before the interview without penalty. The following penalties will be imposed if you cancel a mock interview late or do not show. The following penalties will be imposed if you cancel an interview late or do not show.

Late cancellations during an academic year

  • 1st offense: No penalty is assessed, but your Handshake account is noted.
  • 2nd offense: Your account is blocked from participating in the interviewing process until an email letter of apology to the employer or interviewer is reviewed by the Assistant Director of the Mock Interview Program, Nella Sutyniec. Once approved, the apology must be emailed to the employer or interviewer (cc to nella.sutyniec@MiamiOH.edu). This must be completed within 30 days or your account is disabled for the duration of the academic year.
  • 3rd offense: Your account is permanently disabled, and you will not have access to any Handshake features for the duration of the academic year. A meeting with the Assistant Director of the Mock Interview Program, Nella Sutyniec, is required.

No-shows during an academic year

Ace the Interview Program

Before you participate in a Mock Interview appointment or Mock Interview Day, we recommend you attend an Ace the Interview workshop. These in-person or virtual workshops go over strategies and resources that will help you succeed.
