The Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) sponsors two full-day writing retreats each semester, plus a 4-day retreat (co-sponsored by the colleges) each Winter term. All faculty and graduate students are welcome to attend.

For Fall 2020, retreats will be held virtually on:

  • Saturday, Sept. 12, 8:30AM—4:00PM
  • Friday, Oct. 16, 8:30AM—4:00PM

Logistics of an online retreat

Although we can't provide the usual food and drinks, we'll still structure the retreat in a way that keeps you motivated to write. You will start the session by stating a goal and you can report back on that goal at the end. We'll build in regular breaks with guided stretches and movement, including an extended one for lunch. We'll host virtual breakout rooms, too, for anyone who'd like to work quietly in the company of other attendees.

Here's what to expect after you register:

  • Within a day after registering, you will receive a Google Calendar invitation from the HCWE. Accept and put the invite on your calendar.
  • The day before the retreat, you'll receive a reminder to check-in the next day between 8:30-4:00, with a link for doing so.
  • When you're ready to join the retreat on Saturday, click the link in the reminder email. That link will take you to a check-in document to verify your info and enter a goal/intention for the day.
  • After checking in to the retreat on Saturday, get started writing.
  • For those who would also like to virtually join other writers in a video chat (no sound), the retreat's reminder email and the calendar invitation will both provide a link.
